Nascar...

Does anybody actually watch that shit?

My dad is an avid fan. He watches every race, but he will complain about how shitty the series has gotten over the past few years. I don't get it.

Anyone?

I don't. The live experience seems like it would be a lot like baseball though. Just a bunch of people eating and getting shitfaced while they wait for something interesting to happen, be that a crash or a home run.

The only race I can remotely watch is Bristol. That's only because it's such a small track, so many crashes and lots of passing. I still haven't watched it in a couple years however.

My commute to work includes plenty of curves to the left. I don't need to see boring people do boring turns boringly gliding to the boring left.

I'm not a fan but i'll watch it.

I enjoy almost all forms of auto racing... except drifting.

Same here! I'll watch nascar but just because its a race. I don't particularly like or dislike the series. I love Formula 1 but dislike the cliquey nature and how easily one team is able to dominate. The little tricks like DRS and the battery thing aren't really helping. I prefer actual lead changes, not one guy way out in front the whole race.

The appeal Nascar has over F1 and most other forms of racing....

Oval Tracks.
Yes it's all left turns. But you can see most of the track from one vantage point. In road racing, you find your spot and you can see 1 or 2 turns, then wait until the field comes back around to you.
That screws with television coverage too. You get into a flow watching oval track. Road racing coverage jerks you around, cutting from one shot to the next. Hard to get your bearings.

And these all fall under Branding; how a fan connects to the driver/car/team.
Big Cars
It's much easier to quickly recognize the players.
Unique Paint Schemes
Instead of team colors, each driver has his sponsors paint scheme. I don't have to squint to see if the nose cone, or the helmet, or the camera pod is a different color to see which driver I'm watching. Imagine if they did that in NASCAR, if the 24, 48, and 88 all had the same paint scheme. Crazy.
Unique Numbers
Your number is your identity. It's not like you win the No 1 plate and run that number next season. I don't go out of my way to watch Nascar, but I've absorbed enough to know who is who just by the numbers. I bet you all know who drove the 3 car.

And finally....Passing
Passing can happen anywhere in Nascar. Open-wheel racing on road courses usually means just a few places where passing is possible. The rest is a parade.

no ... no one watches it. not even your dad.

idiot.

whats up recently with everyone making threads about topics they don't like?

I was a fan for a few seasons, over time I just stopped watching though. I don't really have time to watch a 3 hour race each Sunday. DVR isn't the same, especially since someone would probably tell me who won before I got to watch it.

I do enjoy it when I have time though, but Rusty was my driver when I was a fan, I think he even drives anymore.

Stock car racing is a contest of endurance and while I don't slight the drivers or pit crews, it's really damned boring to watch.

Rally racing or anything else with corners is a much better spectator event.

I love Nascar and I go to the 4 close races every year at Pocono and Dover. Even if you don't like Nascar go to a race at a small track. It is utterly amazing.

So yea I watch it unless the Eagles are on during it.

Yup happens to me, and I can't stand getting spoiled the next AM on a talk radio show.
