NASCAR: I just don't get it

Total Refected Power

I respect people's choices of what sports to watch but I don't really have any interest in it. If its all about the risk level then I feel its a chance not worth taking. If other professional sports had high-profile people die every year there would be a huge outcry about the "violence" in sports. To me its a waste of human life and natural resources.

What about that wrestler's death? What about all the injuries football players have to go through? Pretty much all physical sports involve some risk, but there is always a reason people take them. Racing is a thrill, it involves all the senses in your skin and all the processing power in your brain to keep a car so close to out of control for hours on end that no other driver can keep up. Not many can do this

That all depends upon how the people died. When people die in wrestling or in football it is generally the direct result of an action taken by another human being with at least some intent of injury. Assuming for a second that wrestling is not scripted and fake, it is clear that the objective of the sport is specifically to injure one's opponant. I won't argue that the risk in NASCAR is less than that of other sports, but I would hesitate to call it unacceptable, and there is never intent to injure. I'm not certain what you mean about "high-profile people [dying] every year", having followed NASCAR for several years I have not observed this to be true. I have seen many people get injured, but no higher percentage than in football, and having a driver die in a race car is a comparatively rare event.

Wrestling is NOT a sport. It is scripted and is pure entertainment, not competition.
Professional football, basketball, baseball have had no fatalities due to injury that I am aware of. Reggie Lewis of the Celtics dropped dead on the court but he had a bad heart and it was bound to happen anyway.

The difference with NASCAR is that the level of risk is very high compared to other sports. Hurdling 200 MPH in a 2 ton vehicle is dangerous! I believe three drivers (Earnhardt, Petty) and some spectators have died in the recent past.

Imagine if Joe Montana or Dan Marino died on the field. There would be a huge fervor to regulate football.

I respect their skill but I just don't connect with it. So I don't watch it or care about it. Others of course feel differently. Too bad someone lost their life for their love of competition.

look how many people in football who have been critically hurt though. I can think of 2 Lions off the top of my head who have been paralyzed, cant think of their names though.

in racing 90% of the crashes end up with only minor injuries and the driver is back the next week. There is no "disabled list" in racing. When something goes wrong, it will go very wrong. Racing does have a proactive safety initiative that few sports can compete with. The risks can be compared to sky diving. If you choose not to take any risks, you won't be able to even drive on the street. Any time ANY envelope is pushed there is risk, other wise everyone would be at the exact limit all the time.

I tried watching NASCAR one time but ended up falling asleep. Then again, the same thing happened when I watched basketball, baseball, football, hockey and golf. I thought these sports were supposed to be exciting? The best of any sport seems to be when people get in fights. Why not just cut to the chase and just beat the hell out of eachother instead of pushing a ball around?

I sort-of agree w/ you, I think Nascar is really boring, along w/ football and basketball (most of the time, not always). The only sport I really enjoy watching (and doing) is Motocross/Supercross...

of course, thats just me 🙂

I had always found NASCAR to be really boring, last week's Daytona 500 was the first race I had watched and been really interested in. I found the last 10 laps really exciting. Maybe it's because of the rule changes that may have also played a part in Earnhardt's death?

very boring, i've been to an indy car race, very loud, would be kinda kewl to drive, but boring as hell to watch. nascars gotta be even worse with the cars going in freakin circles. I don't consider nascar much of a sport. Other car races which test the skill of drivers with turns everywhere are the way to go.

It is dangerous, but then again, it sparks safty features ideas that otherwise would not be though of. I do agress going in circle is kinda silly. Rally and other road couse are the way to go.

If you look at the bottom, almost never has a wrestler DIED from IN RING action.

And injuries typically only occur when something goes wrong. The risk put forth by these guys are just too great, and the success rate is often about 80%, while in the old days they were very close to 100%. No one ever INTENDS to hurt someone else. I mean, no more than any other "sport".

All contact sports have a risk. Take boxing for example, it is safer now than it has ever been, but every fighter knows that with each fight something may go wrong and he just might meet his maker. Nascar will become safer with less fatalities, but there will always be some who will lose the battle of the odds.

more people die skiing every year than any other sport, partly because it's a leisure sport that anyone can do, and partly because its simply dangerous!

skiers don't bump each other on purpose😛 That earnhart fellow made it a normal thing.. not so sportsman like, and only makes it more like a blood sport. He dug his own grave, and probably others.

Well, the good thing about it is, Nobody's Making You Watch! If you don't like it.......take your little digit and choose another channel! As for the last comment about Dale Earnhardt......if you had any knowledge of racing whatsoever, you would know that bumping is part of racing! Dale was a track vetran....in saying that, he learned from the likes of Richard Petty, Cale Yarbourgho, Dale Waltrip, and the Unser & Allison's.......any of these guys will tell you that Dale Earnhardt raced like they did when they raced........the difference today is that the cars are/were (because of rule changes to make racing more crowd pleasing) able to break from the pack and spread the cars out over the whole track! He didn't do anything out of the ordinary......he just had a very uncanny ability to drive and do things with his car during a race most drivers never thought of. Ask Jeff Gordon......he'll tell you that he started winning consistantly when he started using Dales approach to racing and mimmicked his methods! But, I reiterate, no one will have any problem with you not liking racing......at least I don't......just don't trash something it seems you have little or no real knowledge of! 😉
