Me likey!
I just miss The Intimidator. All this camaraderie crap is BS. There aren't many guys out there that are "feared". That just takes all the fun out of it. I'm not old enough to remember when "stock cars" were stock!
The introduction of the "restrictor plate" in the '80's changed a lot at the super-speedway's, get out the draft and your usually F-'d, Dale E sr hated 'em, NASCAR got concerned when in 1987 Bill Elliot won the #1 pole position over 210MPH, concern was that cars would become airborne during a collision and the retaining fence would not be able to withstand the inertia of a 3000lb+ car hitting it at those speeds and it could conceivably wind up in the grandstands. Interestingly, most race fans when informed of this dismissed the danger and in fact hated the plates and the type of racing they caused. Various forms of "cheating" were uncovered over the years such as intentionally loosening the bolts that hold the plate to the manifold, drilling tiny holes in the intake manifold in spots that could not be seen unless the manifold was off the car, as Richard Petty once famously said, "if you ain't cheating, you ain't winning!" LOL.
