With cars that were recognizable by brand and reasonably stock-based. Much cooler imho.

They have a mini NASCAR museum in a shopping plaza close to here and it's free. One of the cars (I shit you not) on display is a Pinto!. Next time I go over there I'll take my camera along and snap some shots and post 'em

Those things look like they could take out a 12" tree like it wasn't even there.

Yea, but in reality it was MUCH more dangerous back then, the cars had a roll bar, fuel cell, but not much else safety wise. The engines were upgraded by whatever parts or means you could find, nowadays a typical NASCAR engine is 100K+ and is purchased from professional builders.

Question in regards to those NASCAR jackets, do you get advertisement revenue for wearing those things?

It was the other way around. A 12" tree would fold one of those cars up like a crumpled wad of foil.

As someone else mentioned, the safety of modern cars makes these old body on frame designs look like deathtraps, which is what they pretty much were.

Drivers yes, guy on the street no.

Thats why the drivers always say things like "Well my Diet Cherry Mountain Dew Chevy worked well today..."

NASCAR back then was not competitive at all and only 3-4 drivers had a chance at winning a race. Winners routinely lapped the field and sometimes many times over. Ned Jarrett once won a race lapping the 2nd place driver 22 times.

Wish nascar was more like GT3 and raced mostly road courses. Really all the MFGs in the US now have cars capable of a homologation special like the Gt500 ZR1 etc.

True, but remember you get points just for finishing a race, a DNF (did not finish) is the last thing a driver want's..

Tonight the NASCAR Truck series runs on dirt at Eldora Speedway on SPEED. That should be pretty interesting.

I trust you aren't suggesting that simply being BoF is what made them deathtraps as that certainly wouldn't be correct ;)

I have a soft spot for the old days to, but I really like the super speedways. When they go 4 wide into the banks at 200+mph it's pretty bad ass.

It is probably a Pinto-bodied NASCAR Modified. The Pinto bodies were all the rage here in the northeast in the mid 70s to 80s. Here is one of Modified legend Richie Evans' Pinto Modifieds:

Whats the point on nascar? Back in the day didnt the racecars at least make advances in the production models? like special additions?

When is the last time a NASCAR advancement actually trickled down into production technology?
