I removed a nasal polyp myself once. It was awesome. I was having trouble breathing through my left nostril for about 6 months or so. I finally got sick of it one day and inhaled trough that nostril as hard as I could. I felt something tearing and then a bunch of blood squirted out my nose. At the same time I noticed that I was choking on something in the back of my throat. I managed to gag out whatever was back there. Lo and behold, a nasal polyp plopped out onto my bathroom counter. It looked like a little chicken cutlet and had little veins in it. It was about as big as the last joint of my pinky. Yummy!

I ended up needing sinus surgery for the other polyps that were in there. They corrected a deviated septum as well. The surgery was OK (I was knocked out). The recovery kind of sucked.

the polyp surgery is far less painful than the deviated septum surgery.

that ain't much worse. its really not that bad.

i had the deviated septum, the air holes in that exchange into the air way were to small so they had to drill them larger. i had a Polyp surgery and my tonsils out all at the same time!

recovery was easy. getting the packaging pulled out of the nose is by far the worse thing EVER.

i think i need to go back in. after it was done i was amazed at how well i could breath. but now 5-7 years after the left side is never clear. I also get nose bleeds a lot and have pulled out some really nasty gunk.

What's the recovery time like?

I'm looking at it at the end of the month and I'm not quite sure what to expect. Pre-op appointment next week to get the nitty gritty but I wouldn't mind hearing about some experiences ya'll have had, either.
I had one removed in June 08.

Took about an hr cuz it was much bigger than the doctor expected it to be. Waking up from the General Anesthesia was awesome!

Took about a week to heal up.

Good info guys - doesn't sound like the packing removal is any fun.

Although I've heard there's kind of a coagulant that stops the bleeding instead of gauze that some places use.

not when they don't like your recovery rate and fill you with anti-narcotic.

oh yeah. when you have the deviated septum they also put some plastic in the nose to keep the shape then pack it with the tampons. those stay in place a few days longer then the gauze.

that HURT when it came out.

Well, I know you're all dying to know how this turned out, so I'll lay it on you.

Surgery was Tuesday, septoplasty and polyp removal. All in all, it took two hours or so. They put me under with a general and when they brought me out of it, I was not a pleasant individual to be around. I had a piece of gauze strapped to my face that was bleeding through very quickly. No packing up there, but I do have two plastic splints holding my septum in place, which I can disgustingly see if I look up my nose at the right angle.

Yuck.

Aww. Poor guy. When I had my wisdom teeth done (general anesthesia), I was the most humorous person known to mankind when they woke me up.... the second time.
