Nasal irrigation

My right nostril gets plugged at night and I've been using NeilMed SinuFrin (Oxymetazoline HCI) nasal spray. Most of the time I'm not even doing the full 0.1ml spray. About half the time during the day now that nose is clamped shut. I'm looking for alternatives to fix this issue. Saline spray doesn't seem to work. I tried Neilmed Sinuinhaler aroma therapy with no luck. I also tried Breathrite strips and they seem to peel away at the bottom. Would nasal irrigation help? If so what do you recommend? I see you can make your own saline solution so I would do that if it saves money.

P.S. I have seen the topics on nasal spray addictions and lavage.

I began having really bad sinus issues a several years back, and I was always on so many decongestants and pretty much was always battling a sinus infection/headache.

At my annual checkup, I asked him what he recommended, and he suggested I try using a nasal rinse and see if that would help me before referring me to a specialist for it. I picked this NeilMed rinse, and after about a week of using it a few times a day, my sinus problems improved dramatically. I mostly use it in the colder months (October - April) as generally my sinuses are usually OK in hot/humid seasons.

I will say at first the feeling of the rinse in my nasal passages almost felt like I was drowning, but after a few weeks it really didn't bother me much at all once I got used to the sensation.

They sell this brand/kit at places like Target, Sam's Club, and Amazon, so it's easy to find and pretty inexpensive.

Thank you. For less than $11 I'll give it a try to see if it helps. It should be here on Wed. If it helps and I use all the packets then perhaps I'll look into getting a better bottle or pot.

I thought about eventually using a bigger pot, but honestly I like the bottle it comes with. It's perfectly sized for doing both sides, and the pressure of it is really good for flushing out what needs to come out.

Just use it 2-3 times a day for the first week, and after that you should be good enough to go down to once a day (or every other day). It's really been a good purchase for me.

Good to hear you like this bottle and it works well. I'm really hoping this issue resolves quickly since it's just one nose and I don't have allergies AFAIK.

A quick question. If my right nose is the problem nose which side should I use the bottle on first?

If one side of your sinuses are plugged up more than the other side, you might just have to the right side a few times in a row until you unplug it. I often have one side that is worse than the other side.

But outside of that, it doesn't really matter which side you do first (or last). You just want to flush out anything that is causing the congestion.

Ever try Vicks vapour rub? Chest neck and nostrils xd
When I was a child. No idea if it would work since the inhaler with peppermint, eucalyptus, menthol, & lavender doesn't seem to work. I guess Vicks would only add camphor to the eucalyptus & menthol.

In addition to the remedies proposed above, I would like to add that Oxymetazoline can be addictive, and can cause rebound congestion. It should be avoided for chronic problems! I would suggest a doctor's visit to get a referral to an ENT and/or allergist to rule out any underlying conditions. Alternatively, you could put yourself on a once-daily antihistamine like Xyrtec, or if that doesn't help, an OTC nasal spray like Flonase can help without the side effects associated with Oxymetazoline.

Not exactly hard to try. You never know. When I have stuffy nose it works for me.

At this point I'm willing to try anything. Not being able to breath out of one nose during the day is a pain and I refuse to use the spray during the day.

Also you can use a warm humidifier at night and put some vicks near the steam outlet.
