World Wind allows any user to zoom from satellite altitude into any place on Earth, leveraging high resolution LandSat imagery and SRTM elevation data to experience Earth in visually rich 3D, just as if they were really there.

Particular focus was put into the ease of usability so people of all ages can enjoy World Wind. All one needs to control World Wind is a two button mouse. Additional guides and features can be accessed though a simplified menu. Navigation is automated with single clicks of a mouse as well as the ability to type in any location and automatically zoom into it.

World Wind was designed to run on recent PC hardware with 3D accleration. Please refer to the download section for more information on system requirements.

...
Land Sat 7

Using World Wind, you can continue to zoom past Blue Marble and reveal the extremely detailed seamless mosaic of LandSat 7 data.

LandSat 7 is a collection of images from 1999-2003 at an impressive 15 m per pixel resolution. It includes other color bands such as the infrared spectrum. Users will be able browse these different sets as they become available. Any changes and updates are automatically inherited by World Wind.

LandSat 7's resolution makes it possible to see your own city, neighborhood, or landmarks in your vicinity. Seeing the whole globe like this puts the world in context with scientifically accurate data.

Looks great, SirUlli! :D

I tried to download it earlier but it was going at only 10KB/sec, and I was impatient to get some other stuff done, so I decided to wait a bit... I'll definitely be trying it later, though.

appreciate the link SirUlli...

download was about 4 hours, painless install...only running on an AMD 2200 so it's just a tad slow and not sure it's going to handle the close up stuff but fun so far...

XP2200 should be more than enough seeing as 'recommened specs' are for a 1GHz+ CPU

Awesome find Ulli thanks :D

Btw I found the 2nd link was the quickest ,though its only doing 21KB/s atm

Was playing around with it, and zoomed really close on where I lived, and the system sat and processed for over an hour..got to the point where I didn't want to wait any longer and closed it down. That, and it was eating up the pagefile like it was candy :p

Well that sucks to hear about the pagefile usage... I have only 512MB and I'm sure you (Ronin) have much more. :(

Anyway, I'm downloading now at ~70KB/sec, so unless something catastrophic happens, I should have it by morning. ;)

I only have 512 and you have nothing to worry about. The landsat7 server are very bogged down right now so you will have to wait on them. If you live in the US check out the USGS images.

Also I have created a little very simple mod that will show a loading image in the upper right for USGS. You can find it at http://www.aburrr.com/worldwind.htm
I will be updating this soon so to add the resolution upgrade mod. All are simple edits to the xml config file. :)

Oh yeah this was created by an intern by him self. :S

The download servers should be up to speed now. They were /.ed for some time. If for some reason you cannot get them I have the file mirrored on my server.

I've given up on the LandSat7 for a while... I've still been impressed with the USGS maps...

No problem. I have now added the USGS resolution tweak to the archive. If you think the normal USGS data is good try this tweak!

learn.arc.nasa.gov is down for emergency maintenance. A hardware failure occurred on Thursday (9-30-2004) due to increased server load.
We are building a new server and expect to be online by Tuesday (10-05-2004). Web pages and forums will be unavailable until then.
