Many people are wondering Whay President Bush is Pushing For a Moon Base and A mars Landing.

Some Say its to Inspire Us.....................Very noble

Maybe its to build a giant "Laser" on the Moon.

Maybe Saddam Sent His Weapons of Mass Destruction to Mars.

I think its Simpler.

This is another case of Funneling Government Welfare money to Corporations in the Aerospace Industry (Boing, LM, Honeywell, etc.) And To send More jobs to.....

Florida and Texas.

More corporate Welfare at work.

The thing is the space program is essentially a mass infusion of R+D funds to American industry. To go to the moon/mars etc. we have to develop totally new technologies which will be adopted in all segments of our technology driven economy and society.

This form of "corporate welfare" will probably reap dividends far in excess of the initial investment. Previous big space initiatives have.

I do Somewhat Agree. The Surge in Technology sector if we stay commited to this endevor should be massive.

Yet, With the current outsourcing of labor and lack of focus in math and science in education, Will the Gains be made in the Us?

Its Not just florida and Texas, M origional post was intended to spur reations. Other states such as alabama, Ohio, and colorado will benifit also.

I made reference to this senario yesterday and was met with the Conspiracy Theory retort (About 1/3 down - then the responses)

Think it through - Boeing is on a 10 year ban for Space Launch Bids as a government punishment for past indescressions.
Who doe's that leave in the mix and where ?

Lockheed Martin, Lockheed Martin, and Lockheed Martin.

Aerospace Hedquarters for Lockheed Martin are in Bethesda Maryland directly accross the Potomac River overlooking
the Pentagon on the other side of the river. An Employment Pipeline has existed for years between Martin and the Pent
to bring retiring Military contract officers into the equivalent job with Martin, to maintain contact with the person that did replace
them at the pentagon when they left. A few years back Congress passed a law that forced a 2 year service gap between leaving
the Pentagon and taking the active position at the defense contractors project work. (This is where Boeing got in trouble)

Lockheed Martin has their missle and space operations plant in Sunnyvale, Ca.
L/M has aircraft factories in Palmdale, Ca, Fort Worth, Tx, and Marietta, Ga.
L/M has the External Tank plant at Michoud, La.
L/M is the Shuttle Launch Integration Contractor at Cap Canaveral, Fl.
NASA Headquarters is in Houston, Tx.
L/M Headquarters ? Already mentioned - accross the Potomac from the Pentagon.
(Remember Boeing ? Can't bid for 10 years)

Who is left where to do the work ? What Conspiracy Theory ?
All marbles & only one bag.
(Wasn't Cheney's wife on the Lockheed Board of Directors ? And eligible to go back when
Dick is no longer the VP and has returned to his temporarily interupted job at Halliburton)

Boeing may not be able to bid, however, they have resources available for sub-contrating. Northrup also exists.

Many companies will get technological contracts for R&D. A lot will also filter down to the small spin-offs from the engineering schools.

There may not be one prime contracter, NASA may take this on themselves.

Northrup & Grumman merger a few years back in order to survive an unfriendly
buy-out attempt by the then Martin Marietta, which proceded to bouy out Lockheed.

Rockwell was bought by Boeing. Rockwell made the Shuttle Main Engines.
I'm not sure what has become of the 'Root' companies that own Morton - Thiokol
The salt company that makes solid fuel boosters, or Aerojet General, or even
Hercules or US Boosters. Yeah - lot of sub contractors, but there will be
one 'Prime' to integrate and manage this task should it get funding.

Aerospace jobs are all over the Nation. Oklahoma, Kansas, California, Washington, Colorado, Utah, Alabama, etc. Not to mention all of the computer companies that will surely be involved. I am sure at least 20 states will gain jobs from an increased space program.

Edit: Please forgive my spelling of state names

well, Bush is former govnr of Texas and Jeb is current govnr of Florida. So, of course, since Bush is all about benefitting his friends and family, of course hes going to support a new space iniative.

But I guess that smashp forgot about all the other NASA sites that will benefit frlom further space exploration.

Justin:

I completely agree. Even though a big chunk of money will go to Bush contributors, to say nothing of making brother JEB look Presidential, the effect on the economy could be pronounced. I really think this is one of the best proposals Bush has ever made-maybe the ONLY decent one. Not bad coming from a guy who believes Genesis is literally true. :)

Lol, you already know, Charrison, that the number of companies capable of contracting for this are extremely limited. Sub-contracting would happen on many individual parts of the project, as is often the case with such major projects. Those sub-contracts will make a lot of money for a lot of smaller companies, but there are only a couple companies capable of bidding for the overall contracts.

What I'm really concerned about is whether or not this is an election year scheme that will never pan out, or the real deal. The fact that I can't simply accept Bush's pronouncements as a guarantee of at least trying to make it work is what makes me nervous about this administration ;).

I would feel the same, but it appears he has made an effort to increase funding at nasa and help get it turned around as an organization since he came into office. His father tried to sell the full package to get to mars(500billion) and it never made it past congress. This maybe another case of, get what you can now and come back for now later(if NASA is showing real progress).
