NAS with bittorrent downloand and other built in

Hi all,
I'm using Dlink DNS-321 2 bays NAS storage device with 2x1TB drives and I have been happy with it. I know there are other speedier options out there but I don't think I need it. Now it''s time for expansion. I'd another similiar but with upgrades:

1. 4 bays for raid5
2. gigabit ethernet and jumbo frame supports
3. bittorrent download built in so I don't need my pc on to download torrent
4. itunes server built in
5. UPNP so I can stream from IOS devices
6. Last but not least: easy to configure and reliable

Any recommendation is greatly appreciated!
 
Considering the price of NASs that have 4 bays, I would say check out WHS 2011. WHS gives a lot of flexibility because you can install programs.
 
if speed is your concern im recommending the WHS build or maybe a FREENAS build using an old pc.

you also gain a lot of flexibility software-wise as mark suggested as well as hardware-wise being able to add as many drives as you want.

remember a real pc serving up files is going to be A LOT faster than the dns321.

a good starting point for a modern server/nas pc is going to be the zacate platform, a sargas single core sempron, or one of the new atoms or the dual core sandy bridge cpus.
 
Both Qnap and Synology have built in bittorent downloaders, DLNA, and iTunes server. I believe Synologies even has a built in bittorent search as well.
 
I still have this :Fujitsu Siemens intel ss4200-e in my basement but never got around building it. It suppose to support WHS
 
build a pc dude. $20 for an old sc420 dell and throw in some drives. 4gb of ram - good to go for the next 4-5 years of service

- 8 Hotswap Drive Bays populated with 6 hard disks (2 x 160GB, 2 x 250GB, 2 x 300GB)
- 1 Power Supply (dual capable)
- Dell PERC 5/i w/ 512MB cache

Is this good for a my purpose? is it compatible with FreeNAS?

sure but remember the qnap/drobo have special drivers to handle raid with consumer drives. the real server raid requires TLER enterprise drives or you'll have raid failures left and right. raid controllers assume 7-8 seconds and it will drop the drive, a consumer drive will take up to 180 seconds to recover an error, by then the raid controller will have dropped the drive as bad. Also qnap likes to use AV drives which are TLER=0 (no error handling) - it can even combine TLER=8,tler=0(AV), and consumer all together and not have a problem. a traditional raid controller will not be happy with AV nor Consumer drives at all.

freenas and openfiler last time i checked did not have patched ATA drivers to handle this - maybe it's changed but i tried with consumer drives and it failed miserably as i expected.
