I'm looking for an enclosure that can be used as a NAS or a USB external drive.

Basically, 95% of the time I want it to be plugged into my home network acting as a NAS, but occasionally I would like to take it with me and use it as an external hard drive.

Does this device exist? Preferably just an enclosure, so I can add a hard drive of my choosing.

Say 4 or 5 of these bad boys lined up on a wire type shelf (for better ventilation) connected to a switch > connected to a Linksys 54GL router?

Each box will look like a separate machine. Just get an old machine and install FreeNAS on it.

Or buy a real NAS that supports multiple hdds.

If you bought 5 of these, you would be paying $250 for cases, then you still have to buy harddrives. You could build a really cheap computer for less than the price of these cases and put FreeNAS on it.
