I can find lots of usb and esata enclosures for $125-150 but as soon as you add an ethernet card to it, the prices jump up to $300+.

why is that?

You do not add a card you add a Electronic circuitry that function as a mini server and a Nework card.

I.e. it becomes some sort of Mini propriety computer with a Network connection.

In order to save money these mini computers are using open source or propriety firmware (the mini computer's OS), and thus they are Not fully compatible with NTFS.

In most cases it is much better to run a low power computer for a purpose of NAS.

Maybe this can Help, http://forums.anandtech.com/me...id=27&threadid=2267875

i know you don't actually install a card, i was just meaning that when you look at enclosures that have an ethernet port, they start at like $300.
