NARAL: States More Pro-Life, 19 Would Ban Abortion if Roe Overturned Email this article

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- One of the country's leading abortion advocacy groups released a new report on the status of abortion in the fifty states. The survey indicates states are passing pro-life laws at an increasing rate and that nineteen states would quickly ban abortions if Roe v. Wade is overturned.

NARAL on Thursday released the 14th edition of its compendium of state abortion laws. The report grades each state on how much their laws promote or pay for abortions.

The group doesn't like what it sees -- more pro-life laws limiting abortion and helping women choose abortion alternatives.

In fact, in 2004 alone, the group says state legislatures passed 714 pro-life laws, a 28 percent increase over 2003.

?State legislators are continuing to chip away at women's freedom?and they are prepared to go much further if George Bush succeeds in his goal of overturning Roe v. Wade," said newly minted NARAL president Nancy Keenan.

NARAL also surveyed what states will prohibit abortion should President Bush replace retiring pro-abortion Supreme Court justices with ones who are pro-life. The current court backs the Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion by a 6-3 margin.

If Roe is overturned, the group reports, 19 states would quickly prohibit abortion while another 19 would follow closely behind.

Dorinda Bordlee, senior legislative counsel for Americans United for Life, told LifeNews.com that overturning Roe would "simply mean that the people decide in the democratic process, rather than leaving these life and death decisions to the robed rulers of the federal judiciary."

"NARAL is going to have to get comfortable with the democratic process," Bordlee said. "We are a compassionate nation, and the people are standing up to say that we should no longer allow judicial activists to dictate a boundless abortion policy that facilitates the sexual exploitation of women and the destruction of millions of unborn children."

NARAL's numbers are slightly higher than those in an October report issued by the New York-based Center for Reproductive Rights, a leading pro-abortion law firm. http://www.lifenews.com/nat851.html

The CRR report shows 21 states where abortion would almost certainly be illegal if Roe is overturned and nine states where abortion would likely be illegal. The report said abortion would likely remain legal in 20 states if Roe falls.

NARAL indicates that, in only four states, does the governor and a majority of both chambers favor abortion: Connecticut, Maine, New Jersey and Washington.

When Spam reaches a certain phase of development, it sheds its old skin, and grows a new one. This roughly corresponds to the human phase we call "adolescence." Older Spam sometimes suffers from hair loss and wrinkling. This is not to denigrate the integrity or value of the Spam in question. Many people prefer bald, wrinkled Spam, saying it has character. You should always discard the clear jelly before using Spam, although I've found that if I set it aside and wash it with a sodium hydroxide, it makes a dandy floor polish. I tried it on my car, but the next morning I found every cat in my neighborhood licking it and, before the day was done, I had to get a new paint job. Thanks a lot Rip!

Yes, you are doing a great job of showing how the U.S. is entering the Dark Ages.

So you think that opening up the back of a baby's head with a sharp object and sucking out its brains until its skull collapses is enlightened?

Wow the way you put it, it seems all abortions are partial-birth.

I understand why "spam" popped into your head when you read the OP. I'm not sure what that has to do with cheese, however. Or pickled herring. Plus I'd still like to know whether anyone else likes beef liver. My wife loves it, but I can't stand it. Spam's tolerable, but you can keep liver. Are any of Rip's states prepared to outlaw beef liver?

Please advise.

Absolutely not. The last thing we need is more people spamming P&N with anti-abortion, anti-condom, and anti-sex trolls.

Yep, typical zealot approach, present the worst case scenario as the norm in hopes that people will focus on the "pro-life" part and not the "anti-women" aspect of it. The lives of women of child-bearing age don't matter, it's them youngins who are prime for recruitment!

You make ME feel like my brain in being sucked out every time I see this reactionary fluff....

Spare the living first rip!

It isn't PRO-LIFE, it's PRO-BIRTH. Because most of the people trying to save these fetuses usually couldn't care less what happens to them after they're born.

I'm not surprised at all. After seeing such garbage like the 'evolution is a theory not a fact' being passed in one state, I knew that far right conservatives are gonna try to pass all sorts of crap which will get overturned in the future.

I don't know why lifenews.com bothers paying for their webhosting. Riprorin pastes all of their articles here anyways.

Could save them some money.

He post so much about this topic it leads me to believe that he is nothing short of a living abortion himself. Amazing he can copy and paste at all with his limited faculties.

R v. W will NEVER be overturned. Get over it. Abortions will continue and women will still have choices despite clowns like you.

P&N is a pretty divided place but the OP has shown that it is still possible for both sides to come together against Reactionary Extremists like the OP.

Kind of familiar

Please point me to the place where any crypto zealots or "pseudo-libertarian creeps" have come out against extremists like riprorin?

From what I've seen they are in basic agreement with him (anti-sex) even if slightly embarassed by his tactics (spamming).

Quite right. PBA should be outlawed for any reason other than saving the mother's life.

Of course that has nothing to do with 'garden variety' abortion.

ewww..liver.

My mom fixed that once. I came home and opened the door and just about lost it all over the kitchen floor!

All the more reason for it not to be overturned...
What right do I or anyone else have to tell a women what to do with or body or what not to do.

Furthermore I can't understand why these people want to interfere in other people's lives....

If you don't want to have an abortion don't have one....
I guess thats not good enough for you holier than thou folks amoung us though...

Why do we tell people who they can and can't hire?

We are starting to ask members not to simply cut and paste articles without adding some comment about their own view of whatever the subject is. We intend P&N to be a DISCUSSION forum, not a just a place to repost articles that can be found elsewhere.

Ahh yes, the typical you are backwards thinking if you think abortion is bad.. I can understand TOLERATING abortion as a necessary evil (Although I would argue its not necessary), but to CELEBRATE it as the left seems to do is just plain sickening. You are ending human life, or at the very least POTENTIAL human life (I would again argue its life from conception).. Should abortion not be looked upon as the ABSOLUTE last resort?

Some of you lefties on this board act as though killing in war is just so absolutely wrong, yet on the other hand sucking a baby out of its mother through a straw is something that should be protected. Where is the logic behind that?

But, to then say people who are against that are leading us into the DARK AGES? How absolutely fvcking sick is that? If you were planning an idea society, would one of the ideals be to have free abortions for everyone? Or would your ideal be that there would be no need for abortion? One can argue there is a NEED for it now because we don't live in an ideal society, but to say those who oppose it are the ones who are backward thinking is so typical of the left.. its sick, truly sick. It would be like conservatives saying that those who oppose war are leading us into the Dark Ages.. We can argue if war is necessary, but nobody will argue that its a BAD thing.

I really don't see why anyone should tell a woman what to do with her body ....
anyway...
I don't understand how someone can argue that the supposed killing of a baby is wrong...on one hand but, on the other argue for the killing of innocent civilians is justified...if you really believe in protection of the innocent then logically that would be of all innocent right?

The view by me anyway is that it is a part of someones body if a person wants to chop their arm off I don't necessarily think that is a good thing or necessarily a bad one logically but, I maintain their right to do so if they wish to willing do that.
