just went to the FAQ, looks like as long as i pay my 9.95 a month i can listen to what ever i want, but if i want to "keep" the music i have to pay 80-99 cents a song, i also saw this

I don't know about the competition, but what really ticked me off is. No you don't get to keep any of the songs. You are strictly renting them.
1. Very limited music selection. How do you not have any 2pac album. Major artist not listed is horrible, even if he's dead. Or the BeeGees even. None from them except tribute crap.
2. Some songs you have to pay for, which limits the selection even more. Sometimes it's the best song on the album, sometimes it isn't.
3. Windows media player slows down significantly, at least at loading time, and I mean significantly.
4. I had copied the files from one harddrive to another because I bought a new computer and half of the files didn't work because Napster thought I was pirating. I don't need to deal with this crap.
5. You need to pay extra to put them on to your MP3 player. What a load of crock.
6. Program interface didn't always work well. When I wanted to shuffle my playlist, that didn't happen, forcing me to use the slow loading windows media player.

No, the RIAA member companies charge something like 70 cents a song for you to keep them, and $6-8 a month just to rent them.
For $10/month Napster can't afford to pay the RIAA to let you keep them.
I use Napster, but to preview CDs before buying, and to rent CDs I like but don't like enough to buy. Works fine for me.

What about bittorrent or the edonkey network?
Bittorrent & eDonkey are Microsoft's preferred distribution channels for products like Windows XP Professional Corporate Edition and the rest of its software catalogue.
I get all my MS stuff through them. I keep waiting for bittorrent or edonkey to email me about my subscription fees but so far nothing's arrived yet [knock on wood].
As far as I know I believe they do music too.

I did the free trial with Napster a while back - it seemed like a lot of artists weren't included in the "rental" part of the program. I wanted to download some fairly-recent song, but I couldn't "rent" it - I could only buy the track.
It sounds like Yahoo requires an internet connection to check the license for the music. Maybe after you stop subscribing, they kill your license and the music won't play anymore?

People, people people - why would so much of Microsoft's software be on Bittorrent and eDonkey unless they wanted to use Bittorrent/eDonkey as distributors?
I surprised these services aren't more popular since they're so slack with their membership fees.
