Nano ITX nearing introduction

www.epiacenter.com's got pictures of the new motherboard. 12cm*12cm, with vga, usb, ethernet, audio, svideo, and rca out. It seems to be a fully functional reference board, so they must be nearing public release. (Previously pictures were of preproduction boards)

http://www.mini-itx.com also released today their plans to sell Hoojim's nanode, a pretty spifftacular case for the nano ITX boards. So I'm led to believe that end users should be able to buy these things within a month.

I've been waiting for the nano since they first announced plans to build it, so I was very pleased to read about this. For all practical purposes, anything I would do with a nano-ITX is useless. But I still think putting my computer inside an exact cube smaller than that offered by Apple is damn cool.

bump for any info.
I wish somebody would peg down a release date for these boards. I just ordered a Creative Labs Muvo2 mp3 player to harvest the 4GB microdrive from. I'd like to build a system using a nanoITX board, the 4gb MD, and a slotloading slimline dvdrom. I think using all those things and a dc-dc converter + powerbrick, I can keep the size down to about the size of a small cd wallet plus the size of the power brick.

These nano-itx things look cool.

Hell look at the Mini-itx MII10000!
Firewire, USB 2.0, PCMCIA cardbus slot, Flash card slot, Mpeg2 hardware decoder, 6 channel audio, built-in vid card, ethernet.

All that good stuff in a small package.

Hopefully with the nano-itx stuff people will begin to build their own mobile computers. Kinda break down the barriers between PDA's and Notebooks. and such. For instance you can go out and get LCD kits for 220-250 dollars that you can hook up to them via the vga port, and then you have optional touch screens and stuff for that stuff you can hook up thru a serial port.

All that stuff is getting to the point were it's affordable to screw around with for fun.

The built in encryption on these things is top notch. I want one just for that.

If they had serial redirection, VIA's latest offerings would be near perfect!

I definately want to see how these things catch on.
Drag's plan sounds like what I'd like to do with one of these.

Yes I am going to order on to put inside a gamecube case.

That would be cool, I would like to get a system with this MB, a 40GB 1.8" drive, and for multimedia HTPC / DVD+RW and as a normal PC.

these appliance-like computers have been in the works for eons and still haven't really caught on.

hurry up, i need a computer in my toaster.

The latest estimate for an actual market release is sometime in September, though third parties have indicated that a planned Sept. release will probably occur around December.

I'm planning on getting a miniPCI > PCI adapter w/ Hauppauge PVR-250MCE and using this thing to power a HTPC housed in a gutted DVD player chassis. I think it'll be sweet. That, or a custom built ~5" aluminum cube.

The toaster and humidor projects have been done with miniITX boards though =P
