I demand kids wear helmets at all times. One never knows when they will trip and fall. If a child of mine trips on undone shoelaces and falls and hurts their head, I would never forgive myself. Wait... I demand all kids wear velcro shoes so they can not get tripped up on the shoelaces. Wait, I demand all kids wear pillows on their knees because I do not want their knees scuffed. Wait, I demand all blacktops and cement to be replaced by rubber mats.

Sorry guys, as a kid I tried to fly on my bicycle. When I was a kid I jumped a fence and impaled my knee on a tomato stake, yep scar to this day. When I was a kid I waited until my parents went to work then I took my sled up an ice covered hill and went mach 2 straight into a chainlinked fence. I tried clawing at the ice to stop but that failed. I bounced off the chainlinked fence and I have the scars to prove that one too. I still have the scars to show how stupid I was. My parents were not negligible for not knowing how idiotic I was as a kid. Nor should I require society try to predict how to stop the idiocy from happening.

i agree, I would make my kids wear one regardess of law

 I just knew there would be some here who would pipe up and say helmets make sense. I feel sorry for your kids if you (ever) have them.

Let kids be kids. Hell, we never had helmets, car seats, booster seats, or any of the other stupid shit that over protective people have pushed on everybody now days and we survived. I happen to think taking some tumbles and getting hurt is good for kids. They learn their limits.
Let kids be kids? Sure, but take some basic safety precautions. My parents always put me in a helmet when I was out biking or blading, and it's a damn good thing they did. The only reason I have an intact skull right now is because I was wearing a helmet while biking; the dent the helmet took in my place was downright scary.

You don't need to bubblewrap your kids, but you also shouldn't leave them unnecessarily exposed to danger. Any time kids are out doing something with an elevated risk of head injury, they should be wearing a helmet. Helmets are cheap, head injuries are not.

If you live in a area with only one good hill to use, then tough luck.

Personal responsibility and accountability...not to mention being sensible....that is crazy talk!

What I would love to see is if this actually passed how they would enforce it, what the punishment for violating it, and if anyone would actually follow the law.

The city of Toronto, Canada has debated instituting a law mandating children to wear a helmet if they went tobogganing. The articles I read about the proposed law mentioned hiring bylaw officers to patrol known toboggan-friendly hills and hand out tickets to lawbreakers.

 You confuse your hatred for the facts. Read the article again.

Funny thing on the news tonight, they interviewed people in Lowell who were sledding. They went up to a family who had two kids wearing helmets. They asked the father why and he said why not. They asked the little girl if the helmet interfered with her fun. She said no. The family was from Nashua, NH.

Damn Lowell and Nashua, NH for being liberal loonies!!!!

How long ago and did it go through?

seriously, more laws controlling us and how we bring our children about...

I was almost seriously injured in a sledding accident, along with a friend... he had a hairline fracture in his skull, and a concussion, they thought i had blood in my urine, but i did not... i hit the tree sideways, and he hit it head on... would i allow my kid to sled without a helmet? yes...

I guess I didn't realize injuries were so common when sledding. Maybe you North-easterners have some more insane sledding hills than I did as a kid, but when I went sledding it was pretty easy to avoid running into a tree. If you see danger ahead, you bail out and roll off the side of the sled. :p

Helmets seem reasonable, but it shouldn't be required. Maybe just do some PSAs or something like that.

In all seriousness, why? Do helmets somehow make sledding worse?

Helmets should be required in more dangerous areas, but in some areas, they're overkill. Unfortunately, the writers of any laws & enforcement of any laws won't likely apply much common sense. No trees or any other obstacles on the hill or within reach of the hill - no need for a helmet. "Bunny slope" - no helmet require.

this Helmet absolutely required!!

All sleds should have 5mph speed governors....

That way, your helmeted kid's head won't injure my unhelmeted kids head when they crack up.

That way no idiot, who can't drive his sled worth crap, will be killed by the nearest tree...

The difference here is choice, of course.

Why shouldn't parents decide this issue, and many others, for themselves, without a law?

This may go back to state provided health care...if they are paying for your health care, then they get to put a lot of rules on you...

Big deal, maybe those helmets are made in the USA. I could care less if they passed a law that they were required to wear fire proof PJ's.

If you don't like it......... Move.

No one had a problem with SeatBelt laws, or requiring adults to wear a helmet for riding a scooter/motorcycle. I don't see any difference. If I remember correctly in Oregon, they had a helmet law for bicycles required for anyone under 16. It's probably mandatory now.

I think here they just passed that not only do you to buy a frigen child seat but when they get 6-12 years of age now you gotta buy a frigen booster seat. Shit, what's next? A four way seat belt for people over 200 lbs?

To hell with the little shits, I think making them wear them so the tax payer doesn't have to foot the bill when they crack their little melons open and need hundreds of thousands of medical procedure that their parents will bail out on is enough of a reason.
