House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday that she will not seek a leadership position in the new Congress, a pivotal realignment making way for a new generation of leaders after Democrats lost control of the House to Republicans in the midterm elections.

she said in 2018 that she'll be leader for only 4 more years.

She'll leave a giant legacy in the Congress and in the US. What boils me about this. McConnell is around the same age, yet there hasn't been the same intense campaign to get him to step down as well.

My $$$ is on Hakeem Jeffries being the replacement. And yes, her speech was impressive. Regardless of all the mindless shots/accusations/whatever, she has been an amazingly effective leader.

Well Rick Scott did just try to depose him from the leadership because he (Rick Scott) totally fumbled the Republican senate campaign and wasted a fortune.

If the Dems had won the majority she would have stayed speaker for another 2 years but the caucus needs new blood in the leadership and to make room for younger members to rise. So now's as good a time as any to work on that.

It's a good (if long-planned) move that will help get rid of the establishment, but the optics aren't great when it comes weeks after a right-wing extremist tried to come after her. Copycats might get the wrong idea.

#2 and #3 House dems are also around the same age.

wonder if they'll step down from leadership as well?
ie: complete changing of the guard

this is a good time since committees needs to be reshuffled anyway since repubs are now majority

Probably not. It's not often a politician walks away from power.

I guess now Republicans can stop joking about Paul Pelosi getting his head bashed in with a hammer.

what the heck is that?
never heard of it before?

and if he still wants leadership, why even bother to step down from his current role?

Because the whip is the #2 position when your party is in the minority. He’s not going to hold on to that position of power so is electing to drop down to the #3 spot which he might not hold on to either. When you are in Power the Assistant Leader is called the Assistant Speaker and is the #4 position. Clyburn will likely be running against Pete Aguilar for Assistant Leader. As I am assuming the current Assistant Speaker will go for Minority Whip. That said those are just the names being floated. I’d expect multiple people to run for each leadership position.

It appears earlier reports of Clyburn trying to cling on to some level of leadership position might be wrong as there are conflicting reports now.
