The market speaks and says San Francisco is a more desirable place to live than most places in America. People with money tend not to like strip malls.

Give it 5-10 years, then it will be just like St. Louis in the late 60's. The local politicians there need to come visit the Missouri State History Museum to see the exhibit on St. Louis in the 60's - exactly what San Fran is trying now. Then, they should take a nice drive through north St. Louis in the middle of the afternoon (in their bulletproof limos, of course) to see what it's like a little further down the road. The outcomes are so predictable that it's sad that anyone would really think their social experiments would work.

Your parents can't be held accountable for things that weren't a crime at the time they were committed, nor can they be held accountable for morality they didn't have. Those who sleep aren't guilty of anything. They are just robotic machines. The only place we can act is in the now. We can make child mutilation illegal and we can try to show folk what it really is.
