Pelosi: State of the Union in House is off

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, who just wrote a letter to President Trump saying she will not pass a resolution to hold the State of the Union on Tuesday in House chambers, said she did so "because the government is closed."

A reporter asked her why she did not invite Trump to speak. Here's how she put it:

"Because the government is closed, and we've said clearly from the start, when I wrote to him the second time to say since the government is shut down — we do not, let's work together for a mutually agreeable date when we can welcome you to the Capitol to deliver the State of the Union address. The government is still shut down. I still make the offer as for the mutually agreeable date, as the original date was, mutually agreeable, so that we can welcome him properly."​
 
I'm just confused as to how he could make a SOTU speech that can convince anyone that the nation isn't entirely f***ed, or that his attempt at such wouldn't elicit mocking laughter from all but the most delusional Base.

It's as though Nancy just hooked a big Pike. The man cannot stand the idea of being deprived of his SOTU to display and embarrass himself. We were thinking that it would be just fine if he has to deliver the oration from the Oval Office. Last word suggested he plans two speeches -- one of them a campaign rally with that Filth out in the hinterland.

I've got all my chips on Nancy. The man has a weakness, and maybe she can prevail in destroying whatever credibility or respect he still has. But the shutdown must end, he must not be allowed to have his vanity wall, and the Base must be demoralized. That's the only hope, and the only sunshine one could wish for.

Who says the state of the union could not be broadcast on TV?

Is the president required to address congress in the house? I thought it was just tradition?

He can do whatever the eff he wants...he’s the President. He just can’t give SOTU in the House without Pelosi making the formal arrangements.

Exactly. And I'm hoping he takes the bait -- which he thinks he owns anyway -- and does it.

I want to see him make the speech -- on TV. It will be a disaster. Even in the usual Capitol venue, it will be a disaster, but something I would not want my congressman to endure, and it would be such a hypocritical farce that I wouldn't want the House majority to even possibly contribute just by their presence.

I want to see the Asshole sit there in the Oval Office and tell us -- alone -- that the State of the Union is just F***ing great -- except, of course, for the Democrats, a majority of the electorate, and all the media collaborating in a grand conspiracy against him. Maybe he'll even insinuate -- or admit -- that God is against him. For once -- I'd say he would be telling the Truth.

And God should do more to show it. It would heighten my revived belief, aroused as it is with the suspicion that the Evangelicals elected the Anti-Christ and the Spawn of Hell with Russian assistance.

They'll have shots of any pro-Trump demonstration and would likely cover the SOTU held at Donnie's favorite McDonalds. Might be a Fox exclusive though not that I'd watch it wherever it was.

No courage required at all, you just have to have no ability to realize the damage you are causing to the country and the economy. Trump is probably cashing up to begin bottom feeding when his crash comes.

That observation is no shortcoming on your part, but I imagine that the President, keen to opportunities for media exposure, is just intelligent enough to see it the same way.

And where it appears that "having balls" is some aspect of a potential media opportunity, he will just do it. And like every other appearance or statement he makes, in consideration of the "dark electorate" popular majority he ignores as if the Base were exclusively "the American People," he will make an ass of himself. And when he makes an ass of himself, some of the ignorant among the Base will "brighten up" to see their ignorance and peel off.

But the man is so bent on damage to the country, we simply cannot let him stay in office much longer. Maybe we don't have a choice; maybe the GOP slugs in congress will never act as prompted by the Dem House. But he is damaging so many people to obtain so little for his Base, the writing is on the wall. [What? did I make a joke? Ha! That's off the wall!]

The Secret Service knows Trump can't appear in public like that. Certainly not when DC is full of govt workers he isn't paying.
