Marine who was Trinity grad dies in Iraq
Sgt. Wimberg was in an infantry unit
http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbc...article?AID=/20050526/NEWS01/505260424
Marine Sgt. David Neil Wimberg, a Louisville native and Trinity High School graduate, died in Iraq yesterday, a family spokesman said last night.

Details of Wimberg's death were unavailable. But Charlie Zimmerman, a longtime family friend, said two Marines came to the family's St. Regis Park home last night with news of the death and promised that more information would be provided later.

The Department of Defense would not confirm Wimberg's death last night. It does not release information about deceased soldiers until 24 hours after their families are notified, said Lt. Col. Roseanne Lynch, a spokeswoman.

Wimberg, 24, was in the infantry and began a seven-month tour in Iraq in February, according to information from the family relayed through Zimmerman. Wimberg joined the Marines after graduating from Trinity High School in 1999.

"He was a gentleman," said Joey Porter, the school's vice president for advancement. "Our hearts go out to David and to his family, and to all the Trinity alums serving in the armed services."

After graduating from high school, Wimberg spent four years in the Marines, including being stationed in Okinawa for two years, Zimmerman said. He returned home last year but soon signed on with a Columbus, Ohio, reserve unit, which subsequently was activated.

"He did it for four years, and had the choice to rejoin or get out, and he got out," said Jack Graham, Wimberg's friend since kindergarten. "But he kind of felt unfulfilled and felt his friends were going into a fight and that he should be with them."

Just a few days ago, Wimberg's unit was hit. After the attack, Wimberg sent an e-mail to his family to tell them he was all right.

"Try not to worry about me," Wimberg wrote in the e-mail, a copy of which Zimmerman provided. "I am doing good over here. I do not regret coming back into the Marines. ?"

Graham learned of Wimberg's death about 30 minutes before he planned to send his friend an e-mail last night.

"His brother called me about four days ago with a way to e-mail him," Graham said. "A group of his friends and I were ready to e-mail him. I got the call maybe half an hour before I was going to write him."

Graham said Wimberg was quiet around people he didn't know well but fiercely loyal to his friends. Before Wimberg left for Iraq, a friend tried to thank him for his military service, Graham said.

"He wasn't looking for thanks," Graham said. "He said, 'If your friends were in a fight, you'd go over there.' "

Twenty-two Kentuckians have died in Iraq since combat began in 2003, according to icasualties.org, a Web site that tracks military fatalities and injuries in Iraq.

Four other Louisvillians have died during the war: Petty Officer Third Class Jeffrey L. Wiener, 31, who died on May 7 of this year; Staff Sgt. George S. Rentschler, 31, April 7, 2004; Sgt. Michael D. Acklin II, 25, Nov. 15, 2003; and Sgt. Darrin K. Potter, 24, Sept. 29, 2003.
That's my high school alma mater. His family lives a stone's throw away from my ex-in-law's.

Thread is stuck at 666 posts, so here are my condolences for all those who lost there lives, and for Spc. Donald Laverne Wheeler was affectionately known as "DJ" to his family. He was a 22 year old from my home town. I am 21 and it hurt to lose one of my peers. DJ was killed while on patrol in a humvee in Tikrit.
