BAGHDAD - A Black Hawk helicopter went down Wednesday in northern Iraq, killing all 14 U.S. soldiers aboard, the military said, the deadliest crash since January 2005.

CHICAGO -- The Department of Defense announced Thursday the death of a Chicago soldier in combat in Iraq.

Pfc. Omar E. Torres, 20, died Aug. 22 in Baghdad, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his unit during combat operations.

Torres was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

I knew him. Hes the cousin of a very close friend of mine.
