The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Spc. Jacob C. Palmatier, 29, of Springfield, Ill., died Feb. 24 in Muqdadiyah, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his military vehicle. Palmatier was assigned to 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Brigade, 3d Infantry Division, Fort Benning, Ga.

One of my best friends. I saw him for the last time shortly before his deployment.
Jacob, you are deeply missed.

2-27-2005256th from Carencro Killed in Iraq

National Guard soldier from Lafayette, Staff Sgt. Nicholas J. Olivier, 26, has been killed in Iraq.

Olivier was with the 256th Infantry Brigade. He was killed Wednesday when a homemade bomb exploded while he was on ground patrol in Baghdad, the governor's office said.

News of his death came as the remains of another Louisiana guard member killed in Iraq arrived in the state.

"This afternoon the family of another fallen soldier, Staff Sergeant Seth Trahan, is receiving him home from Iraq," Gov. Kathleen Blanco said in a news release. "They will memorialize and lay him to rest this weekend in Crowley. My heart goes out to them at this difficult time."

Trahan's funeral is set for 2 p.m. at the Northside Assembly of God Church in Crowley.
