If you had to choose three modern brands of cars, in a very general sense, what would be your favorite?

It can be for any reason, whether you like their entire model line, their history, anything.

I would choose.

1. Mercedes Benz
2. Ferrari
3. Lexus

All for the same reason, their history, general model lineup, reliability, and most importantly, the way they all have kept the excitement of their brand alive, each coming out with exciting new models and innovations while maintain class and style.

i think from a historic point of view:

1. jeep
2. ford
3. audi or vw

from a personal point of view

1. jeep
2. mb
3. audi

No way I'd put Lexus in the top three. Mercedes...maybe. Lexus, no fucking way.

Sorry homeboy, I think they perfected the modern luxury car in a technological sense and in terms of style.

They were the first luxury car company to define "modernist" luxury, while many other luxury car companies stuck with old world designs and influences (think Jaguar or Rolls Royce.) They did something to the luxury car that made it clean and new, while other car companies just cleaned up what was already old fashioned.

I own a Lexus, and I'd probably buy another, but there's just no way I'd put Lexus in my top three brands as you so broadly defined it. They need to step up their game to get to that level.

That's just me though. YMMV.

I just think they filled a void, a modernist luxury car, not some high fauluting big grilled pimp mobile with a huge hood ornament.

As someone like myself who appreciates modern design, I salute them.

1) Porsche
2) BMW
3) Ford

The top two because I've never driven any model of theirs that wasn't engaging and fun to drive in addition to fitting me like a glove. Ford sneaks in at #3 because of the magnificent turnaround in recent years as well as the fact that I will forever have a soft spot for the Mustang.

Considering I like cars that I can beat the piss out of...

1. Chevy
2. Nissan
3. ughhhhh what? Ummm... shit. UUUUmmmmmmmMMMM... I give up. Lotus, 40 years ago.

They make the best cars on the planet...why would anyone choose the lesser of those really?

Except that best is such a subjective term in this case. I like the luxury/sports car brands as much as the next enthusiast, but I also admire the Hondas and Fords of the marketplace, companies which can make affordable yet still competent cars. It's not that hard to make a great car at a six-figure price point.

The only car company that has vehicles that I completely like is Ferrari. All of the rest have 1 or 2 cars. Porsche comes the closest, but I really dislike the Cayenne and Panamera.

I might throw Lamborghini off my list and replace it with Lotus...I'm biased that way, I admit it.
