I much prefer the older classics. Most modern scifi writings don't capture my imagination anywhere nearas well as the stuff I read when I was growing up.

When Worlds Collide/After Worlds Collide- Dosteyevsky(?)
The Time Machine - Wells
War of the Worlds- Wells
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea - Verne
2001 - Space Oddessey series - Clarke

few others:

The Locke - Anderson
Journey to the Center of the Earth - Verne

I'd have to add: (by author, because 5 books is too hard)

Anne McCaffrey: Dragons (etc.) of Pern, The Ship Who Sang, etc...
Larry Niven: many
Harrison: Stainless Steel Rat :)
Saberhagen: Berzerker Wars
Bradbury: A number of older stories are short-stories, rather than novels. Some very interesting ideas.
Heinlein: Many. The Door Into Summer
L. Ron Hubbard: Battlefield Earth, Footfall

Oops. Did I go over 5??? ;)

Footfall is by Niven/Pournelle. Good book though.
I like alot of Niven's stuff, but somehow it did't rise to my "Best Of" list. It doesn't seem to have aged well for me. For example, I just re-read Ring World, and was disapointed that it didn't live up to my memory of it.

Anybody else notice that their high school favorites have faded with time?

Yep. I don't think I could narrow it down to just 5 best books.
