Name this part

[996GT2]

I was looking through Speedhunters.com today and happened to see a few older Toyotas with what looks like a radiator hanging off the front, with exposed tubing going into the engine bay. Looks too small to be an intercooler, so it it an oil cooler? Why do they hang it off the bumper instead of behind the grille?

Its definitely a radiator for something. I think that its an intercooler for an aftermarket turbocharger fitted to the car. Its owner obviously has modded the car judging from the wheels, paint job and front spoiler - god knows what they've modded mechanically.

You would think he or she would have gone for bonnet vents for airflow to the intercooler (mounted above the engine) rather than fixing the 'cooler to the front bumper. It looks shit.

btw Thats bigger than ther intercooler on my WRX.

...actually,it's an oil cooler and often it's for show. It was functional on some race cars back in the day, but many of those hoses don't go to anything at all. iirc it's called "Bosozuka style".

So someone chose to put that on their car without it potentially serving a purpose? He or she must be nuts - I wouldn't dream of doing that to my car.

Inlet and outlet hoses are far too small for air, even on a shit car like that. Also, why leave hoses flopping unprotected outside the body of the car, where they can get snagged on stuff, break, and drain vital fluid? My guess is that most likely it's non-functional, designed merely to further enhance the garish styling.

ROFL. That's the first time I've seen an exhaust acting as a crumple zone for the back of a car.
