belongs in the cases and cooling section. Not CPU and Overclocking.

Anyhow, Louis is probably the most accurate on his top 3.

Except his third choice should be Ximgatec.

I have both the TRUE (Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme) and a Zalman 9700 (and have used several Zalman 9500s in the past).

While the TRUE is often quoted as one of the best, you'll also read that many people end up 'lapping' their TRUE... that is, they sand down the base of it to a near mirror finish to make it as FLAT as possible. My Zalman 9700 worked better, IMO, on a Q9450, than my TRUE did on my Q6600 G0. And I didn't have to lap it. And I like how it gets retained a LOT better.

Unless you are going for 3.8-4.0+ territory, a Zalman 9700 or 9500 should be high on your list. The TRUE takes a lot more work than it's worth at anything less, IMO.

ummm the 9700 is to be honest very out dated.

3.8ghz on a Q6600 is usually water territory as well. 90-95% of the time.

Trust me OP, if your on a budget, grab a Xigmatec.

If you want the best, a Lapped TRUE is hard beat.

I got to be honest, being a vaporphase cooling guy myself, all these air-cooled HSF's look about the same to me...push some air thru the fins on a heatsink, ok I get it, please don't mind me while I continue to yawn. ;)

I think the TRUE and IFX-14 are pretty much the best, with the Xigmatek stuff/similar stuff close too, sometimes better. Noctua's stuff is okay, but designed for silence rather than performance. Zalman's ever-popular 9700/9500 models are outdated and can't be compared, really, with the newer towers... the Tuniq Tower is slightly older than the TRUE, but still good. Arctic Cooling makes good cheap heatsinks if you're on a budget, and they're worth mentioning as probably the best bang for the buck.

i personally prefer down blowing coolers, which is why i got the big typhoon, but in terms of raw performance, i believe the IFX-14, TRUE, and the Tuniq Tower will give you the lowest temperatures.

:D

air sinks is just too boring for me as well, but i do know, on quads, true, tuniq, or xigmatec is highly recomended.

Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines. :p

This needs to get moved to cases and cooling.
