I was walking in the woods, admiring the beaver pond and hoping to see a pileated woodpecker D) when I happend upon a big old snapper ambulating across the path. She was an old one, about two and a half feet across. Thinking of my well appreciated digits and limbs, I opted to leave her in peace. That was probably the largest snapper I've seen.

Besides, with one that big there's not much of a safe way to move it without a really good piece of hardwood. Two options with snappers: grasp it by the tail and hold it away from the body so it can't take out a thigh, or put a stick in its mouth and lift by that. If you try to lift by the sides of the shell, the head will extend far enough out and back to take a finger or wrist.

yep... when i was younger we used to go fisihing all the time, and run-in's with snapping turtles was a regular thing. ugly mofo's. Their jaws are so powerful its unbelievable.
