I miss my hometown Boston's food:

1. Steakbomb subs... I didn't know that was a regional thing. You can get it anywhere in New England. It's basically Cheesesteak on steroids with pepperoni, salami, etc with mushrooms and onions. It's a massive sub that is disgustingly delicious.

2. Boston Chinatown food... wife and I agree that it's better than Manhattan chinatown. That's a BIG claim; but we stand by it.

3. Amazing thai place in Woburn MA.... i haven't had pad thai that good since.

you could always try making a French-Canadian Tourtière. These are fantastic meat pies and relatively easy to make.
Well, she was french and from Canada, so that's probably what she made. That and awesome rum balls, which we _do_ still have the recipe for! Maybe it's because she used a lot of Rum...

Any North Atlantic white fish filet fresh and baked at a New England fish port restaurant. Or if in Nova Scotia Cod Fish Cheeks the most delicious of all fish bits.

Any meal at Taragato a Hungarian via Argentina restaurant on Bloor East of Spadina. And the waitresses in their Hungarian peasant blouses and red boots chastising for discussing business while eating such devine food . The strudel was made on site. They have been gone for 30 years

Spent first 40 years trying to duplicate Polish grandmothers cooking at 40 married Polish woman solved problem.

I miss my grandpa's Swedish pancakes.
After he died, my mom took up the title of Swedish pancake master of the family.
I miss my mom's swedish pancakes.

Now my aunt is the master of Swedish pancakes.

I hope its many years before I need to master the recipe.

Oh, and I miss *real* fish and chips. From the English part of town where I was born. Tall dark wood benches, fresh haddock, perfect amount of crispiness and chips (fries) to die for. I was too young to try the beer. Also, great potato and fish cakes. Last time I was down in that area the shop was gone 🙁. I didn't look for the English bakery not too far off, which was also excellent.

Spinach and ricotta or meat?

There is one correct answer.

Choose wisely!

Spinach and Meat, baked in a meat sauce with cheese on top. At least that's how the restaurant I used to order from prepared it....just discovered the restaurant(GiGi's Pizza in Vancouver)shutdown for good last June after 30 years in business. 🙁

Halibut or bust

Another few from where I use to live:

'Wah-Kee Noodles' - a chinese place that made the rice noodles in-house. Best hangover remedy food ever. Big bowl of tong mein with bbq pork and governor's beef...mmmmm.

'Bandung Indonesian' - obviously it was mainly Indo food, but they had the best Pad Thai in town, better than any of the Thai restaurants I went to.

Funnily, these two restaurants are almost neighbors, literally in the same stripmall-type building.

I want some raw fish. The kind where they grab the live fish out of the fish tank and slice it raw for you. I haven't had that in over a year since covid, and I really miss it. I've been getting my raw fish fix by doing takeout sushi and sashimi but it's not the same. And I want plates of raw oysters, abalone, uni, clams, octopus, scallops, the works to go with the raw fish. My mouth is salivating thinking about it.

I tried numerous fish & chips stores here. So far the best place is Archies. They have great chips and their halibut is awesome but it ain't cheap any more.

WHERE IS THIS

Crepes from the booths at Christkindlmarkt in Bavaria, with gluhwein. I'd start out with ham or salami and cheese, then go back for one with chocolate sauce and powdered sugar for dessert.
Also the doner kebabs and hendl from the neighborhood food truck.

Those were the one! I think my mom would call it Chinese Stew instead of Chop Suey but it was the same thing. It wasn't authentic Chinese food at all but was so good. You know what, I think our moms got the recipe right off the La Choy can.
That's a valid theory...looking into it.

Look up Jacques Pepin on YouTube. He'll show you how to make crepes in 2 minutes. Great skill to have in your pocket for a quick meal or dessert.
