Name That Anime

Need help finding an amine. I apologize for the vagueness, but I point to the fact that half the amine made are like this.

1. Late 90s early 2000s
2. Male main character
3. Martial Arts originated.
4. No DPS fireball and flying stuff.
5. Similer to "Berserk" without weapons and newer.
6. Main character was basically a very free spirited type. No care in the world, has special hand to hand training, bit of a loner etc.
7. Would fight against foes wielding weaponry (swords etc).



Edit: More clues

1a.Late 90s at the most early, not the freakn 80s!
8. Main char didnt really have comrads I could remmeber. Possible one male around the same age and a female slightly younger.
9. Wholly earth based and more a realistic type deal.
10. It was either based in the past or present, (no space stuff)
11. No special crap (lazers guns spacecraft aliens), just 'amazing' marital arts.
12. Kenshin meets Berserk without weapons.
13. Had at least a full season (26 ep) possibly more. not sure.
14. Main character in his early to mid 20s
15. I remember in one episode (one of the later ones) he was up against someone with a sword. He was unarmed. They fight in a big green field. No industry or anything around. Just grass and mountains.
16. Main Char has short hair. I cannot recall the color.
17. Edo Period Japan ( No, not freak'n inuyasha)

Animation was between Bleach and Fist of the North Star. Much nerwer than Fist of the North Star but several years behind bleach. Possibly simile to Naruto when it first came out /animenerd
 
Shura no Toki might fit the description. Martial art style that is not allowed to use weapons. I think the clan name is Mutsu. Kicks the crap out of everybody else regardless of if they use weapons or not.

Shura no Toki - no... BUT Much closer that the last two except more modern.
Baki the Grappler : No, but thats slightly closer than Shura, what im thinking of looks 5+ years newer in terms of anime art. (that looks early 90s)


Plot? ... Hard to remember without being general. main character is casual. Not wanting to show off. Other characters either run into him by chance and fight, or run into him by work of mouth because he starts to get a reputation as unbeatable in hand to hand. Its been at least 5 years since I saw it so its hard to recall.
