Well, not sure if this fits the whole "Rated vs Appreciated" bit, but I agree wholeheartedly with Dark City, Fight Club, October Sky, The Rock, and Episode 1.

I'll add:

1) The Iron Giant - Absolutely fantastic in every way. An almost perfect movie! Do NOT pass this over as a cartoon, although suitable for kids it is not a "Kid's Movie". GO RENT IT NOW!!!!

2) So I Married An Axe Murderer - Fantastic, hilarious, laugh a minute movie. If you like Mike Myers, go rent this - its one of his best movies ever! And Romance + Comedy = great date rental!

3) Apollo 13 - I just had to mention it in case anyone hasn't seen it before. :)

4) The Usual Suspects - The best mystery, rollercoaster, plot intense, intelligent movie of its kind. Amazing.

12 Monkeys should be arriving in the mail in about an hour from netflix :)
A second for the Wall. That's a bitchin' movie. If you're lucky you can catch it uncut and uninterupted on PBS. If you're lucky.
A second for So I married an axe murderer. Comedy central airs this every once in a while too.

God how I hated "3 Kings". Ice Cube starred in the movie... that says it all. Have yet to watch a good George Clooney movie also, they have all been "average" IMHO.

Boy, am I surprised only 1 poster mentioned Memento. Run at theatres that ran PI.

Anyone who saw this will tell you it is absolutely the best movie put out in the last two years. Don't go to imdb, too many spoilers, just see it.

By the way Memento is ranked 12th out of all movies ever produced at imdb. I believe, it is number 1 now because it has a 9.0 rating.

Of course, Fight Club had to be the most under-rated movie. Mainly because of it's release so close to the Columbine incident; it got a bad rap.

A lot of you guys are listing movies that got really good critical reviews. For example, "Dark City" and "12 Monkeys" got rave reviews. Roger Ebert loved "Dark City" and lists it among the best sci-fi movies ever.

I thought we were supposed to list movies that a lot of critics did not like but that you thought was very good.

i agree with most of the movies u guys have mentioned except for dark city -- one of the worst movies i have ever seen (is it the one where its like a floating city in space, kinda matrix like with the main character having all these powers).

Nobody liked Joe Dirt, but I thought it was pretty funny.

I agree on Office Space, and I don't know what kind of reviews 12 monkeys got when it first came out, but it's one of my favorite movies.

I totally agree about 'Gattaca'. Very good film.

I also think 'Fearless', with Jeff Bridges and Rosie Perez was an outstanding film that didn't get much attention. And how about Albert Brooks's 'Defending Your Life'? Its his peak movie.

Another film I thought was real good was "Back Beat."

Wow... I had no idea this thread was still here. :)

Anyway...

like 'Princess Mononoke',
and 'Ghost in the Shell'

Those are already considered great ANime movies.

I also want to say post anything you want. Be it under rated, under appreaciated etc, sorry for the confusion. :)

Also, I'd like to add American History X. One of the best movies I've seen in a long time. I had no idea about it till they showed it on the Oscars. :)

Postman - Yes my friend, i liked that movie
Dark city
Ghost in a Shell - (not really underrated, but not many have seen it)
Deep Impact - Better than the Wills movie, (Is it harder to teach astronauts to be oil drillers, or oil drillers to be astronauts?)
The movie version of Dune
