But to name one, how about Balvenie.

Is Beefeaters a good brand of gin? I used to always see that in the top=shelf as a kid. Top shelf usually meant, out of hand of children, not necessarily, the best of the best

Beefeaters and Tanqueray are pretty equivalent. So is Bombay. Bombay just spends more on advertising these days, so it's the preferred gin of 12 year old Maxim magazine readers who have never tasted anything stronger than light beer and even that made them puke.

Rum go with Bacardi, it's the only name that rum drinkers will know other than Captain Morgan and that can't be substituted for plain rum.

Scotch is a world unto itself. If you're looking to have one good bottle on hand go with Johnnie Walker Black. It's got the best chance of being acceptable to any scotch drinker.

For good drinking I use Belvedere.

Other than working my way through college as a bartender and getting liquor knowledge from the real world instead of magazine ads like the kiddies here, yep, absolutely nothing.

If people order a rum and Coke they get well rum. If they specify a brand it's ALWAYS Bacardi or Captain Morgan. Period. Nobody walks into a bar and orders Cruzan and Coke. Or any other brand. NOBODY. EVER. You can run a bar with your cheap-o well rum, Bacardi and CM and you can go years without getting an order that you can't fill.

As for Scotch, if you really want to cater to the scotch drinker and can only carry a single bottle, Johnnie Walker Black is the most logical choice. It's the name that the casual drinker will know and it's a good enough scotch that the single malt snob will accept it. The single malts are too strong for the neophyte and the other affordable blends will turn off the poseur. JW Black is the one that straddles both ends of the market and will be ordered in the real world.
