.

Really anything to do with medical is a great and always has been a bomb proof profession to be in. People will always need medical care.

I would say upper management at failed financial investment banks. Not only is their job safe, but they get bonuses as well.

They say that the movie industry was +15% last year, and that's not just the studios but cineplexes. In recession people are going out to the movies more. My mouth hung open in disbelief.

This thread is right up my alley. I'm being given $24K by the state of Michigan to attend any college full time for 2 years. The only restriction is I have to graduate at the end of the two years. I already have a bachelors in Industrial Management and am trying to think of what I'd like to do at my age (51). I've been a die maker for 30 years.

I wouldn't mind something in healthcare, but I doubt I'd make a good nurse.

Hmm.

so you omitted this because you wanted to be asked.. why?

North American Free Trade Agreement Transitional Adjustment Assistance Program. I guess it is more a Federal program, the more I read about it.

If you are separated from a company because your job was displaced to foreign soil, your company can petition to fall under this program.

Benefits are pretty sweet.

You can receive 2 years of unemployment benefits if you agree to training
They pay for any trips to seek employment up to $1200
They pay for 90% of moving expenses (no cap) + $1200 if you find employment elsewhere making 70% or more of your previous employment
They pay for 65% of healthcare insurance expenses (not sure of the length of time, probably 2 years)

Because I was forced to retire I'm only due the educational benefits. And, the $24K is a soft cap, the counselor that was giving the orientation today said that she's only seen one educational request turned down and it was for $100K to become a pilot.

btw-I omitted it because I'm a reluctant two fingered typist and didn't feel it was germane to the subject of me having to make a career decision.

wow those are awesome benefits. I need to find a company that is outsourcing and bribe a hiring manager to keep me on for a few months 😛

Pretty much anything in the medical field

We have entire hospitals closing in So. Cal. periodically. So, there may be medical jobs, but they may tend to move around.

OK, I still don't get it. Dude is American. No less-so than McCain (born in Panama canal zone) or any other president that was ever elected. He's no more black than he his white...so what's the big deal?

yeah, I still laughed, but seriously....

the conspiracy theorists claim he was not born in Hawaii like he states, but in Kenya, which would not make him a "natural born citizen". McCain would not qualify either, although if McCain was born on a military base, I guess that could be considered US soil.

I applied for a new job, was called back in 8 hours, interviewed 48 hours later, hired an hour after the interview.
Almost, but in my area which is normally huge on healthcare most if not all hospitals have a hiring freeze, including on RNs. They need them, but they are just not hiring anybody at all right now!

Recession proof jobs:

President
Grave Digger
Bankruptcy attorney

NO not recession proof. I am struggling by having to accept happy meal coupons for servicing 70 year old nursing home residents. Don't laugh... hetero only. It has been hard. (bad choice of words) sometimes I wonder why I got into this line of work. Started out with wanted a new Geforce256 card back in the day and ballooned from there.

Healthcare-related.

Biotech.

No way in hell; that industry has tanked massively. Back in December a group was talking about approaching Congress for some tax relief because the industry is so screwed up.

Essentially many, if not most, Biotechs are funded by venture capitalist. However, as it is rather obvious, people are not venturing capital.

I worked in the industry at a contract research laboratory working with Big Pharma and Biotechs and my company laid off ~20% of the workforce (yours truly among them). Other competitors, suppliers, manufacturers, and producers have been on hiring freezes, lay offs, or whatever.

The pharmaceutical research industry has tanked - that should have people pretty concerned, but it doesn't seem to make the news. It appears that more people are too concerned with the Big 3 than with medical & pharmaceutical research.

So sad, so relentlessly hilarious, and SO true!

I really want to step up and say that it isn't funny. There are so many people who turn to drugs and alcohol when things get rough. The treatment centers boomed during the Great Depression.

But it is kind of funny...maybe more morbid? I have put a lot of thought and research into this and I can't see anything that would negatively affect this job.
