Well, I would HOPE you have your operating system updates

sure, but with using firefox + hardware router they aren't 100% necessary. let's say i just installed windows xp. the chances of me getting hacked/exploited with my setup are 0.02%. I don't get viruses (have no need for a virus scanner) and spyware as well for that matter, except for the cookies here and there :p. Its just a matter of simple security and common sense.

It is my opinion that you overestimate your security.

I agree, in this day and age of constant innovation in terms of malicious software, it is both naive and ignorant to think you are above getting hacked or infected, just because you take a few basic pre-cautions and claim to have common sense. The only way to make sure nothing happens to your system is to take if off the network completely, and then your chances of anything happening drop immensely, but are not completely eradicated.

I don't think anyone is trying to promote software that is supposed to drastically improve the speed of Windows, or any other program. I run the programs I do for maintenance, because it has been my experience that my system stays healthy longer, if I keep junk from pilling up in my registry and on my hard drive, and I keep my hard drive itself monitored and healthy. I like to think in terms of prevention, not repair. If I run a few tools to prevent spyware and viruses, along with tools to keep my Windows installation from becoming bloated and my hard drive healthy, then I have done my part in preventing a problem. If something happens, at least I know there wasn't much more I could do about it than what I had already done, and thanks to Ghost, I have a backup ready and loaded in 15 minutes.

Just my 3 cents....;)

Ok, I have all of Windows' critical updates, too.

Just minutes ago I ran Win Doctor on two of my computers.

I had to add a dll to both of them and repair Roxio on one and all is well now (at least according to Win Doctor).

I consider at least one program like this as vital

Clipmate - A clipboard replacement for Windows. I'm sure others exist, some might even be better. I have no idea how I got along without this, stores everything you cut, even images and stuff. I have mine set to archive for 2 weeks, so I can go back and find anything I copied in a flash.

To be honest most of those 'tweaking' programs only exist to make money from users who can't maintain systems. There is no one be all or end all program that will make windows run faster. Good maintenance will get you further.

All in the eye of the beholder. I've used Diskeeper 9, Perfect Disk 7 and O&O. To me DK was a bloated bit of software (3MB PD vs 18MB DK) for what it did, although it still 'is' a good defragger, although I think O&O may just nick above it. The offline pagefile defrag of PD is a good option..

And tripple post quotes...poor form Googer

Couldn't get the Trial Version to work. "Service not started", even after Manually starting the Service as it suggests, nothing. Probably have something interfering with it.

Yup. Gave up on it, will use Speed disk. I think another app might be blocking OO from working, but don't really feel like tracking it down. I only Defrag once a year, so it's not a major deal. :)

It is working for me, I think it is about on PAR or close to the standard set by Diskeeper, but I think Diskeeper is faster. OO Reads and defragments in a very simiar manner that diskeeper 7 and 8 do. Pretty good if you ask me, I might recomend O&O to someone.

Diskeeper 8 and 9 alow for boot time defragmentation, directory consolidation, MBR Defragmentation and some other features I cannot remember. I don't think O&O offers that, but I could be wrong.

My vote is X-Setup Pro and Spybot S&D Combined. Both free.

I like X-Setup. It'll let you tweak more things in Windows than you thought existed. Or at least close.
Tweak the wrong things, and your system might not boot all the way. But it'll usually warn you if you try to mess with that kind of setting.

X-Setup is just a fancy shamcy Registry editor. All the settings that is does and many that it does not do can be changed using regedit.

PerfectDisk is really the best defragger. I know this debate (PD or DK) goes on for a long time, but personally i just prefer PerfectDisk :)
