here's a dare: name one software that you think everyone should have that tweaks and cleans up the system and optimizes windows so it runs faster.

I only know system mechanic, but there should be alternatives out there.....

i really dont like complete solutions - i use various programs which do the task and, probably, MUCH better than system mechanic.

1) Perfect Disk for disk defragmentation
2) regcleaner or jv16 tools for cleaning registry and VARIOUS other functions.
3) adaware and spybot etc. for spyware
4) cablenut (THE best) internet settings tweaker

I vote Microsoft Antispyware.

I use DiskKeeper. The Windows defragmenter is just DK lite. :)

I would second that. I can google, but at the risk of googling the wrong item and actually getting spyware or crapware is a valid concern.

The likelyhood of the first hit on google being a fake one for an extremely prominent software title is very small.

firefox is a secuirty program almost, its so much safe internet explorer

Avoid the warez and other questionable sites and IE is perfectly safe. Though, if you want to argue security, Opera is safer than Firefox ;)

Now that I think about it. ABSOLUTELY VITAL would probably be all your rounds of windows update + SP2 :)

- i use diskeeper for defragging
- spybot, ms antispyware, ad-aware, bazooka for spyware (i only ever use MS, the others are there in case something happens and i need the backup)
- DriverHeaven's TuneXP for some simple tweaks (www.driverheaven.net)
- RegSupreme Pro for regsitry cleaning (www.macecraft.com)
- Norton 2004, AVG Free, Kaspersky Trial for antivirus (like spyware situation, the 2 latter are just for backup in case norton can't handle something)

I use Norton Systemworks a lot, SpeedDisk to defrag, but I use RegClean to clean out all the junk I don't need in my registry. Norton's WinDoctor is also helpful, as it goes through the system and cleans out all the garbage from uninstalls, missing files, etc. I also like to use Ghost to image my drives to my external network drive. Also Driver Cleaner Pro is helpful for installing new video drivers, SpeedFan for monitoring temps and keeping my SFF quiet, Microsoft AntiSpyware for spyware, even though I never have any, and ATI Tool for keepin tabs on my X800XL.

Cause we're too lazy to look up the links ourselves, and then go to the trouble of posting them.:p

I like X-Setup. It'll let you tweak more things in Windows than you thought existed. Or at least close.
Tweak the wrong things, and your system might not boot all the way. But it'll usually warn you if you try to mess with that kind of setting.

CrapCleaner - freeware system cleaner. Does registry work, and it can clean up temp files and shortcuts, and some various other things I never use. I mainly use its registry cleaner.

Sequoia View - good for seeing where all your hard drive space is being used.

And other than that, I use Norton Speed Disk after using the Windows defragger; each has features I like. And I also use Norton WinDoctor, as it does some registry checks that CrapCleaner doesn't do.

None of this crap is "ABSOLUTELY VITAL" as I don't have any of it (except firefox) and my machines all work fine.

Those programs that say they speed up Windows and stuff are junk. System Mechanic is a pefect example. The things that mauy acually be worth while can be done manually anyway. Then it does things like clean the registry which is just dangerous and would not effect performance one bit. I think I remember thsat System Mechanic cleared RAM too? That is just stupid. I advise just uninstalling that crap.

Programs like CCleaner are good for cleaning up files though. TweakUI is good too. Defraggers help performance if the file you frequently acess are heavily fragmented, but still doesn't matter much because the heads move around so much anyway that it wouldn't matter if a single file was contigious or not.

Anti-viorus and anti-spyware would be the most important

^

especially if you know how to take care of your systems, then you don't need a program to make them run well/better.

sure, but with using firefox + hardware router they aren't 100% necessary. let's say i just installed windows xp. the chances of me getting hacked/exploited with my setup are 0.02%. I don't get viruses (have no need for a virus scanner) and spyware as well for that matter, except for the cookies here and there :p. Its just a matter of simple security and common sense.

It is my opinion that you overestimate your security.
