My buddy's fiance wants a gift idea for him. He just got a PS3 and she wants to get him a game. Racing or 1st person shooter, tell me what the best ones are on PS3. Thanks!

shooter: Resistance or call of duty
racing: If he waits until April, Gran Turismo. If not, Motorstorm.

Does he just just have a PS3, or does he also have a 360 and/or game on a PC? If he does have another platform, then he will likely want the PS3 exclusives.

Resistance is a very good FPS. Plays sort of like a cross between Halo and Call of Duty. It also has local co-op which adds to just about any FPS, IMO. Besides, Resistance 2 is on the way and looking sweet... so he'll likely want to have played the first one when the second arrives (hopefully by this Christmas). I'd also suggest Warhawk. It's a Battlefield-like multiplayer only game. It's a blast to play. It's plays in third person though.. not sure if that matters. It can purchased directly from the PSN store as a download or at a b&m store on disc.

For a racers look into Motorstorm. A very good off-road racing game. It has lots of downloadable add-ons available in the PSN store. The main complaint against Motorstorm is the lack of local VS racing. You can only race against the AI locally or against people online.

I think any of those games are great starts. There are other great games outside of those genres though. Uncharted is a fantastic adventure game and Ratchet & Clank is a great platformer. Both have a pretty heavy emphasis on shooting, so they might appeal to someone that likes FPS.

He only has a PS3 and does mild PC gaming on an old laptop, so that's a non-issue. He just got the console and has no games yet, so ideally this first game should be a rather involving & replayable game.

Is PS3 online gaming free and/or convenient? I'm sure he'd love to play online against people, but if there's additional cost or hassle he will probably skip it.

Thanks for the detailed reply Thraxen, and to everyone else for their input.

EDIT
One final note - when I say the game should be involving, I guess I mean it will have a long, playable life. It should not be one of those games that requires hours of solid play to advance at all, as he likely can only play in relatively short spurts here & there as he's rather busy.

Thanks again

Sure, why not? It's great game that's a blast to play. Again, the main problem with the game is the lack of local multiplayer. Other than that it's a very solid racing game.

It's free and not difficult. It's not as neatly tied together as Live though... meaning you can't be chatting with people playing different games or anything like that, but overall it works just fine.

Anyway, since the guy doesn't have a 360 or do any serious PC gaming, that opens up a lot of the great multiplatform options. As other people have suggest, Burnout Paradise is a great arcade-style racing game that's a lot of fun. DiRT is good racing game that's much less arcadey than Motorstorm or Burnout. For shooters there's lot of options. Call of Duty 4 is an obvious and very good choice. Rainbow 6 Las Vegas is another great one that has a sequel due out in the next couple of months.

Burnout Paradise and Uncharted. The gunplay in Uncharted is as good as any shooter on any platform. Theres also UT3 and COD4, but I play those on PC.

Yeah I don't think he would care about really diving into the whole online gaming community, but just taking a spare 30 minutes or so and quickly getting into some online games.

So if Motostorm doesn't have a decent "local" MP feature, which of these racing games do have a good one? What about Burnout Paradise - it's more of an arcade style game that doesn't require a lot of skill it seems (at least in terms of realistic driving physics), does that have a decent local MP feature? I'm sure his finance wouldn't mind playing every now and then.

Thanks again all

Oh snap, how could I forget UT3.

UT3 is the best shooter, definitely. You can even use keyboard/mouse!!

I enjoy F.E.A.R., but the graphics suck compared to games like uncharted: drakes fortune. Also has slow load times, but the game itself is fun.

call of duty 4 is great , so is resistance.

burnout paradise for arcade racer (need for speed also)
or
Motorstorm for dirt fun and AWESOME visuals.

my personal favorite arcade racer and most played title on my ps3...
Ridge Racer 7 but very aquired...id say rent first, see if you like it. i rented it...didnt like it at first...then got hooked into its quirky mechanics and never looked back. good visuals too.
