My buddy's fiance wants a gift idea for him. He just got a PS3 and she wants to get him a game. Racing or 1st person shooter, tell me what the best ones are on PS3. Thanks!
He only has a PS3 and does mild PC gaming on an old laptop, so that's a non-issue. He just got the console and has no games yet, so ideally this first game should be a rather involving & replayable game.Originally posted by: Thraxen
Does he just just have a PS3, or does he also have a 360 and/or game on a PC? If he does have another platform, then he will likely want the PS3 exclusives.
Resistance is a very good FPS. Plays sort of like a cross between Halo and Call of Duty. It also has local co-op which adds to just about any FPS, IMO. Besides, Resistance 2 is on the way and looking sweet... so he'll likely want to have played the first one when the second arrives (hopefully by this Christmas). I'd also suggest Warhawk. It's a Battlefield-like multiplayer only game. It's a blast to play. It's plays in third person though.. not sure if that matters. It can purchased directly from the PSN store as a download or at a b&m store on disc.
For a racers look into Motorstorm. A very good off-road racing game. It has lots of downloadable add-ons available in the PSN store. The main complaint against Motorstorm is the lack of local VS racing. You can only race against the AI locally or against people online.
I think any of those games are great starts. There are other great games outside of those genres though. Uncharted is a fantastic adventure game and Ratchet & Clank is a great platformer. Both have a pretty heavy emphasis on shooting, so they might appeal to someone that likes FPS.

Is PS3 online gaming free and/or convenient? I'm sure he'd love to play online against people, but if there's additional cost or hassle he will probably skip it.
Yeah I don't think he would care about really diving into the whole online gaming community, but just taking a spare 30 minutes or so and quickly getting into some online games.Originally posted by: Thraxen
It's free and not difficult. It's not as neatly tied together as Live though... meaning you can't be chatting with people playing different games or anything like that, but overall it works just fine.

Burnout Paradise and Uncharted. The gunplay in Uncharted is as good as any shooter on any platform. Theres also UT3 and COD4, but I play those on PC.
