And now for a bit of useless trivia, there was one song that was covered 3 times, and held the #1 spot on the charts in the 60's, again in the 70's, and # 3 in the 80's, that's 3 separate decades. It is the only song that has done this, can you name it? need a hint? GFR

Yes I thought it was his song at first, and I do like it much better than the original.
You can just feel Cash's emotion in it. It's moving.

edit:
Ooops! Meant to hit edit and I hit quote!
Oh well!

I like several covers better than the original songs, but I knew they were covers when I heard them.
Emerald - Skyclad (original by Thin Lizzy)
Come on Eileen - Skyclad (original by Dexy's Midnight Runners)
Sympathy for the Devil - Tiamat (original by the Rolling Stones)
Over the Hills and Far Away - Thyrfing (original by Gary Moore)

holy crap, that's a cover?? :Q

No, it's not. They did cover Lover's In a Dangerous Time by Bruce Cockburn though as one of their first songs and it was sort of what started them off up here as far as I know (I hate the Barenaked Ladies):

Bruce Cockburn version

I can't find the original video for their cover version.

I was very surprised when I found out that the majority of George Thorogood's songs were actually covers...
i.e. One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer

But seriously, to not know that Smooth Criminal was a cover of MJ's song - either you're retarded, or when it came to comprehending the OP, well... you're retarded. Unless, of course, everyone is fixated on turning this into "name song covers that were better than the original thread." Gee, we haven't had one of those threads in, ohhhhh, at least a month or two.

I like Lonesome George's music and enjoyed him in concert ~20 years ago though he records mostly covers. First album of his I purchased, his 2nd or 3rd album, I thought was his music until I read the album credits.

One poster mentioned Aretha Franklin's RESPECT. I bought the album in the late 60's and later replaced it with a CD, but I never knew the song was a cover!

Take on Me, covered by Capnjazz

I also think Ann Beretta's cover of Surrender is on par with Cheap Trick's original.

You thought that was a CapnJazz original"? Dear lord.

Fields of Gold - originally Sting, but I like Eva Cassidy better.

Lots of Loreena McKennitt songs are covers of old stuff but done very well.

One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer as covered by George Thorogood.

I didn't know it was a John Lee Hooker song until I was going through my grandfather's old records one day converting them to digital.
