like the title says, can anyone name me a thought-provoking/'emotionally' powerful movie? I really enjoy a really good, deep movie. Something that leaves you for the next few days in a state of awe over what you just watched. To name a few movies I was that way with:
Butterfly Effect
Requiem for a Dream

I was in awe from:
The Punisher
Constantine
The entire Band of Brothers series
The Pianist

What puts me in that state of awe is not the action, thats not a required part, but the power and depth of the storyline. If its not performed well, I wont get anything from it either. A-class movies in terms of acting abilities is usually a prerequisite. But yea, its usually an already-powerful subject matter (as is the case of The Pianist, Band of Brothers, and Requiem for a Dream.. Constantine can be said to be powerful in those terms as well due to the religious/hell theme.).

So there it is, what I am looking for. Anyone have any ideas? Till then I am gonna watch War of the Worlds as its just a kickass movie. :)

Nothing about Ashton Kutcher is thought provoking. That aside and off the top of my head...

Apocolypse Now and Donnie Darko come to mind.

I can agree with Requiem, the Pianist and maybe Band of Brothers, the rest of your movies are total hollywood crap.

watched it for the first time last night and it was pretty awesome. i wouldn't say the most thought provoking, but it had a lot of well done emotional scenes.

why? because constantine and punisher are based off comic books? That automatically means trash? I for one thought they used excellent source material that was deeper than the typical 'im a good guy lets go kill all the bad guys' type of comic book story.
butterfly effect is a love/hate type of movie. most people seem not to like it because of ashton himself, although the majority of the movie does not revolve around him but rather the younger him. Again I thought the story was quite good and the way it was delivered had an impact.

Besides many good ones above,

Gattaca
Wings of Desire
Dark City
Krzysztof Kieslowski's Three Colors / Trois Couleurs trilogy and The Decalogue series

I watched the Director's Cut version of it and thought it was very good.

No because they were bombs, both critcally and at the box office.

Wings of Desire is somewhere between 10 and 100 times as good as City of Angels. Far Away So Close is between 3.14 and 9.86 times as good. IMHO of course.

you let movie critics and box office sales judge movies for you? going into a movie with the notion that it will suck, usually makes the movie bad for you because your mind wants it to be bad to meet your preconcieved notion.
based on that, Equilibrium wouldn't have been so good either. Had it had a bigger budget, it would have been even more of a kickass movie, but the lower budget had effects on the overall impact of the film that were out of the director's control.
Personally I heard nothing but rave reviews of The Punisher, so I am not so sure where you are getting that information. Critics often do not rate movies similar to The Punisher and Constantine that good anyway. Word of mouth is how those movies spread around.
