Name a highly reviewed game you hate and a poorly reviewed game you love

The highly reviewed game I hate is GTA IV. It seemed like it got 10/10 reviews from everyone and being a huge fan of GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas I bought it launch day. What a disappointment. The driving is terrible in this game, Niko drives like an old lady. The characters and writing are even worse. I wanted to drive Roman into the harbor every time he called and hearing Niko whine about his life of crime and how he wanted to become a good guy after just shooting 50 people to their deaths was tiring. The missions were about as exciting as closing your sixth Oblivion gate and it didn't have the great side characters I was used to from other GTA games. I played through the entire game because I kept expecting it to get good at some point, but it never did. Then a couple of years ago I figured I'd try this on my PC since I originally played it on 360. I couldn't believe the optimization was so poor. My Xeon E3-1231v3 pretty much cuts through any modern game I throw at it (other than Arma III) but my framerates were often in the forties for a game from 2008. The only redeeming value in this game for me is it was how I discovered Ricky Gervais, thanks to three or four hilarious stand up acts he does in the game. But this game is a 4/10 in my book, and the only reason it gets that is I figure 3/10 and lower should be reserved for games somehow broken. This game isn't buggy (other than PC optimization), it just bores me to death. I hated it so much I waited 3 or 4 months to get GTA V after it came out, fearing I'd get burned again. And I'm someone who bought Vice City, San Andreas, and IV the day they came out. Thankfully GTA V returned the series back to classic status, that game is amazing.

The poorly reviewed game I love is Nier Gestalt. I'm surprised by how many terrible reviews it got. It does start off very slow with boring fetch quests for the first couple of hours, but it makes sense in the story since you're a broke father trying to do anything to hustle a few gold for your sick daughter. The graphics aren't anything to write home about even for last gen. The combat is kind of button mashing. But the soundtrack is awesome and the character development and story is absolute top notch. I think it might have my favorite story of any game I played in the 360/PS3 gen. This game is easily a strong 8.5/10 in my book.

I don't normally read reviews and i have said it before on this forum but Doom 3 is horrible. It came out around the same time as Far Cry which was an open world. Doom 3 was a pretty game but the mechanics sucked. I walk past a nook in a hallway that is empty but once i go past it a demon suddenly appears. I hated that game!!!!

For poorly reviewed games i loved Ghost in the Machine: Stand Alone Complex - First Assault Online. It was a free to play CS clone but i found it very enjoyable and had a solid base of players until they cancelled it late last year.

GTA V is crap.

Why do you say so? I thought GTA V was amazing graphically, and the performance was rock solid too. I thought the driving physics were right on point for what I expect out of a GTA game: namely, tight arcade style driving. I loved the characters. With Trevor this was the first time since Tommy Vercetti that we got a character who acted the way most of us actually play the game. I love that they brought back the rampages. It killed me massacring hipsters in front of a coffee shop or national guard in front of a base. I thought the story line was hilarious, especially any part involving Trevor. I thought the setting was amazing. When I first got the game I just loved to go climb mountains for the views. Beating the crap out of hikers on Mt Chiliad was funny as hell, as was getting killed by mountain lions when hiking up those mountains. GTA V was the exact next gen iteration of the series I hoped for back when I was playing Vice City and San Andreas.

Every GTA after San Andreas, especially 4. The matrix drive scene at the beginning of GTA5 was all I needed to see of that shitty game.

Mario Kart 64 - what a piece of shit easy ass game that coddled to noobs. It took about an hour to get as good as you can possibly get at that game. I hated that game and IMO it was the downfall of the SMK series. Every one after that was worse and worse other than the DS one, and the latest one that is on Switch is alright. It's still way too random with all of the dumb items like the blue shell and what not, but it's still fun. I just can't take it serious. SMK on SNES took actual skill and the skill gap between noobs and experts was drastic. It's nowhere near that anymore.

Can't really think of games with bad reviews that I like. I really don't read reviews or anything anymore either, unless it's just a game I'm completely unsure of. I typically know what games I want months before they come out and I get them regardless of reviews. Although with a lot of PSVR games I've been not necessarily reading reviews, but also reading user's opinions on them.

EDIT:

Actually I can think of one I did like that got pretty bad reviews - Ryse on Xbox One. I thought that game was fantastic and was a ton of fun to play through. The graphics in it were incredible and I loved the dramatic combat. Sure it was kind of a button masher to fight, but it involved timing and I still liked it. It was also a good length (not too long not too short) and had a pretty epic ending if I remember correctly.

Yeah but Doom 3 had very mixed reviews because of all the problems. At least pros and gamers were willing to acknowledge the lameness.

A better example would be saying you dont like the new doom, cuz everyone else says its friggen awesome.

Wow I was going to say I liked Blue Stinger... what are the chances?

I did not like Breath of the Wild.

Coming from tank controlled resident evil to that was a big leap IMO. I bought that game at launch with my dreamcast.

I liked botw but it's not even the best Zelda game.

I got Majora's Mask for the N64 the day it came out but was unable to get into it, try as I might. Only being able to play it for an hour before all my progress was reset was jarring to me as I tend to prefer a slower but more complete pace to my games. Everyone gushes about it, but it just never jelled with me. 🙁 But don't worry, MM. I still love ya. I have a full sized 24"x36" poster of the game in my apartment. 🙂

I can't remember the last time I read a game review, which is odd (that I don't do it at all now) because when I was a kid I used to buy Amiga magazines regularly and keep up with what was going on in both gaming and software/hardware that way.

I think most of the games I've bought in recent years were either new versions of games I had previously bought, a fair few were bought at budget prices from the local supermarket. 'The Witcher 3' I had heard of through hardware reviews and my wife is always on the look-out for another RPG as she likes to watch me playing them. I enjoyed that immensely.

The closest game to the topic I can think of was Crysis. It was a game I'd heard of through hardware reviews and it had been mentioned a fair few times on the forum so I got it as a birthday present (as these encounters gave me the impression it was good). I think I played it for two hours before getting bored of it.

Cyberpunk 2077 is a game I'm waiting on tenterhooks for as I have high hopes as a result of W3. Ideally I'd give it a few months for them to iron out the bugs but I think I'll be in too much of a hurry for it.

On console:

Hate is a strong word, but was seriously underwhelmed by Killzone 3, it amounted to an "also ran".

I was one of the few on this forum that liked the first Assassin's Creed. It was trashed for being repetitive and monotonous for a sandbox game. I made my own fun, and love the fight near the end with all the knights. I played the series until ACIII, it felt stale and I could not get into it. I will try black flag since I hear that one is different than the rest.

I'll say that Watchdogs was pretty bad. I bought it and played it for like 2 hours and couldn't get into it. It's on my try again list.

Fallout 4 was pretty cool but I got sick of it. Never finished it and never will. People love it. I love the genre but it just felt slow or something. To much time doing nothing.

Recently, that game with the alien blobs in outser space is a game that I just couldn't get into. Another try again later game.

Otherwise ... take any game in a genre that I don't like ..... have a game get released in that genre that is the "best ever" .... I'll try it and inevitably hate it.

THE ORINAL MASS EFFECT WAS TRASH!

I tried the first Assassin's Creed and didn't like it at all. Swore off them until 4 because I saw videos of the sailing and it looked cool. Loved 4 and played Origins and loved Origins. I just don't like the normal Assassin's Creed games. Also I'm not a fan of the modern day stuff at all. To me it takes away from the cool historical stuff.

Did we play the same game?

While I don't hate GTA V, I'm going to say it was probably my worst purchase since it's just not fun like older GTA games. Rockstar tried too hard to prevent people from just having fun with the single player so they would delve into the online where they are getting nickle and dimed by Rockstar with money packs. Not to mention they replaced Vigilate and Burglary missions with yoga and tennis... Who the hell decides they want to have some fun by playing a Grand Theft Auto game by playing a 15 minute game of tennis?

Well-rated games I don't care for: Diablo II, League of Legends, Left 4 Dead
Poorly-rated games I liked: No Man's Sky

Dunno what you were playing but I had dozens and dozens of hours of fun playing it offline. It wasn't the minigames I was doing either which are for character stats. I did lots of car collecting and customizing, flying planes and choppers, exploring the sea for treasure and finding UFOs.

Seeing as the online game didn't even release until months after the main game was out, that assertion doesn't make sense.

It makes perfect sense when you stop projecting. GTAO was talked about since day 1 and given the track record of past GTA games (especially IV which had a very popular online portion), the amount of people who would get bored of a GTA game within three months is laughably small. The vast majority of people were waiting to play GTAO and were just doing the single player to kill time and given the fact that online has paid content and single player doesn't, it makes perfect sense that they wanted to steer people toward the online portion.

Don't get me wrong, I've tried to have fun in single player. I've played through the campaign numerous times, but what little enjoyment I had with just messing around, it was always ended shortly after the cops arrived. The moment I saw that warrant star appear, I felt like I was playing Oblivion with the psychic guards because no matter where I ran, the cops knew exactly where to find me. No matter how fast I drove, the cops were always faster. No matter how big my vehicle, the cops could always ram me off the road. I once left the game idling as I left my character standing on the sidewalk and I came back to multiple cops shooting at me. I loaded my game and watched to see what happened and apparently if you're standing completely still - not touching the controller - random pedestrians will walk by, get pissed because you're too close to them, and either call the cops or just attack you. If you retaliate, the cops come.
