If you bite your nails and plan on quiting....or if you have successfully quit biting your nails.....

How did you do it? And no hot sauce doesn't work....just makes it taste better...

I stopped for about 3 months recently, but I found myself doing it out of habit when I got really stressed out last week.
crap.
oh well.

hahaha. i like that about the hot sauce.
good point.

some clear finger nail polish or that stuff women put on their nails to make them stronger, whatever thats called.

i dont have room to talk though, i chew my nails like crazy. no plans on stopping either.

I used to do it all the time, but I've not done it in several months. Not sure how I did it. I just made a conscious effort to not do it no matter how much I wanted to.

Gourmettea, this is not at all connected to biting your nails, but I would like to direct your attention to this thread.
😀

i started bititing the skin off the tips of my fingers. that is how i stopped biting my finger nails. on the downside, the tips of my fingers are FUBAR

Left hand I stopped 2 years ago when I had it bandaged for a couple of weeks when I burned it. The right I recently just stopped by no special tricks, just catching myself everytime I go to gnaw on them. The truly odd thing is that given my current job situation I have probably never been under more stress than I am currently yet I have not resumed the habit.

Good question... I've been biting my nails for close to 20 years. When I was 9 or 10, I was offered $100 by my grandmother (a TON of money to me!) to stop biting them, but I couldn't do it. 🙁

how about just cut the nails?
I bite my finger instead 🙁 only when I am studying tho. the rest of the time, both of my hands are on the keyboard.

trim your fingernails every day so there is nothing to bite.

Or if you are that hell bent on quitting, I think they may like a clear-coat fingernail polish type deal. Slap some of that on and you'll gag when you taste it.

this is kind of a branch off......but i've always wondered about the correlation between my oral fixation and being bottle fed.......I was not breast fed, due to being born in the 70's and some reason mothers did't breast feed at that time....at least not in Taiwan...Anyways all of you who do bite your nails were you bottle fed???.....Or it doesn't really matter anyone here bite their nails and was fed ol' natural?

I am 22 years old and I've been biting/picking at my skin near the nails for quite some time. I also find it annoying and gross. Especially from another person's view. My nails are not bitten to the point that you can tell I actually bite them. However my skin around my nails are FUBAR'd. I wish I could stop and I try to catch myself but I forget about it eventually or my mind is just not strong enough and my habit just keeps happening.

This does not solve the problem, troll.
Yes, I'm an evil troll. Fingernail biting is often associated with anxiety. I was suggesting a humorous way to rid him of anxiousness and help him relax, fgt.

Well this may sound odd, but I took St. John's Wort for several months and found that I just stopped without thinking about it. One day, I was like "oh, wth? I have fingernails?"

After deciding it didn't do much depression wise, I moved to Serzone, which also didn't do anything, and Wellbutrin, which also didn't do anything. Interestingly(?), I also resumed biting my nails.

Totally anecdotal, and even I'm not sure it was the St. John's Wort, but you could give it a shot (if you're not already on other medication).

Also, if you make a habit of grooming your nails, you will probably do better, if for no other reason than there aren't the little jaggy edges that are so much fun to gnaw on.

I only do it when I'm in stressful situations... That's how you can see if i've had a bad week... all my nails'll be short.

I bite my nails. I keep them trimmed up so I don't do it as often. The only time I really chew on them is when I'm stressed.

I still pick at my cuticles a lot, only when there is skin hanging. I also carry a Swiss Army knife that has scissors, so if I'm really chewing on them, I pull out the scissors and trim them up.

I want to know how to stop popping my knuckles!

I started going in for regular manicures 2 months ago,my hands look wonderful now.
