I got a kitten a few days ago to keep my sister's dog company.

My sister's dog can't be left at home alone without having separation anxiety and acting out (ripped up toilet paper, mail, etc). She's an angel otherwise. Anyway, she needed company. She loves other dogs (as well as people, cats, etc) but she acted lethargic when we tried getting one. Even though it was one of her siblings who she LOVES visiting, it didn't work out.

Anyway, we figured that a cat would be a bit different. She loves the neighbor's cat and we figured that the cat getting used to her was the most important part, hence the need for a kitten. We got this little guy a few days ago:

Oh, hai. Teh kitteh wuz here minit ago.
DAMMIT. Hold still cat.
Looks like this is the best I can do.

The thing wouldn't hold still! Anyway, it hissed and swiped at the dog for a couple days (terrifying the dog!) but they spent all day today playing together. It looks like things will work out, so I need to name her.

I'm drawing a blank. Give me some suggestions ATOT. FWIW, the previous owners called her "Marley."

EDIT: Perhaps a complimentary name to the dog? Her name is Sashi (Sashiko). I dunno what it means... ask my sister (I know that she is unsure about the spelling, sometimes wwriting it "Sachi"). It'd have to be different enough for the dog to tell the difference though.

EDIT 2: OK, I'm pretty sure it's a boy no matter what they say. It's not a problem, but knowing the gender is kind of important when choosing a name.

What's wrong with Marley? Make her full name Marlene(after Marlene Dietrich), and call her Marley for short.

Nothing really, but it's still a kitten and cat's rarely learn their name anyway. Just looking for something better I guess, but I might just take your suggestion. Thanks!

Cats will definitely learn their name. It's not as apparent as it is with dogs, as cats only come to you when it suits them :^D

I like Marley. I like Alice a lot for a cat's name also. My 2 kittiots are named Frankie and Junior. The kids named them.

I bet you loved it when your sister let you play with her snatch then?

Actually, those pics were taken at 1600x1200 and reseized/cropped and converted to GIF because I have little storage space remaining on my paid pics.apartment808.com account. Considering that I couldn't get the cat to hold still, it suits the source material fine.

Every cat I've had has learned his/her name. They need to hear their names often.

Have you owend multiple cats simultaneously and they responded individually? Every cat I've ever owned has come running when I call "Here kitty kitty kitty," but that's a little different. Of course they CAN learn, but their attitude makes it difficult to ever confirm/enforce.

If I would have thought of Marin in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, I may have done it. Now, I'd be naming her the same as your cat. ;)

My two know which I'm talking to when I use their names.

Yup. I have 2 male cats, Yeats and Calhoun. Each responds individually to his name, and both respond when I say "boys". Yeats we adopted as an adolescent, so it's not much of a surprise he picked up on his name. Calhoun, OTOH, is an adopted feral cat, so it is surprising to me that he picked up on his name in a couple of months.

To get a cat to learn his/her name, I say it over and over again while petting him. Also, associate the name while feeding, playing, etc.

Terrible blur on the movement though.

That'll never work for me because I'm programmed to say "good kitty" or "good girl"while I pet. It doesn't confuse the dog when I say "good dog" and "good girl." ;)

It was low light. Both the subjects and the camera were moving. I was in a hurry and couldn't take more at the time.

What breed is that cat in the first pic. Almost looks like a dog.

The damned cat wouldn't stop moving before I could get my hand away from it and to the camera. The dog is a Pomer-huahua. Not quite as cat-like as some Poms but, IMO, that's a good thing.
I'd go with Chu-anain. ;)

Too hard to say. ;)
