Atlanta NAACP: After sentence, let quarterback Michael Vick return to NFL, preferably Falcons

By ERRIN HAINES, Associated Press Writer
August 22, 2007

ATLANTA (AP) -- An NAACP leader said Michael Vick should be allowed to return to the NFL, preferably the Atlanta Falcons, after serving his sentence for his role in a dogfighting operation.

"As a society, we should aid in his rehabilitation and welcome a new Michael Vick back into the community without a permanent loss of his career in football," said R.L. White, president of the NAACP's Atlanta chapter. "We further ask the NFL, Falcons, and the sponsors not to permanently ban Mr. Vick from his ability to bring hours of enjoyment to fans all over this country."

White said the Falcons quarterback made a mistake and should be allowed to prove he has learned from that mistake.

On Monday, Vick said through a lawyer that he will plead guilty to a federal charge of conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and conspiracy to sponsor a dog in an animal fighting venture.

Three Vick associates have pleaded guilty to the conspiracy charge and say Vick provided nearly all the gambling and operating funds for the "Bad Newz Kennels" dogfighting enterprise. Two of them also said Vick participated in executing at least eight underperforming dogs, raising the possibility of the animal cruelty charges.

Last month, state and local leaders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People urged the public not to rush to judgment in the Vick case. The civil rights organization said animal rights groups, talk radio and the news media were vilifying the embattled athlete, and that his team and corporate sponsors were prematurely punishing Vick.

White said the Atlanta chapter supports Vick's decision to accept a plea bargain if it's in his best interest, but he questioned the credibility of Vick's co-defendants, saying an admission of guilt might be more about cutting losses than the truth.

"At this point, you're not looking at guilt or innocence," White said, referring to the possible harsher sentence Vick could have received had he taken his case to trial and been found guilty. "You're thinking, 'What I better do is cut my losses and take a plea.' But if he saw this as the best thing to do at this point for his future, then I think he made the correct choice."

White said he regretted that the plea deal will mean all the facts of the case might never be known.

"Some have said things to save their own necks," White said. "Michael Vick has received more negative press than if he had killed a human being."

White said he does not support dogfighting and that he considers it as bad as hunting.

"His crime is, it was a dog," White said.

1. I have no problem with anyone advocating their belief that Vick, after serving his sentence, should be allowed to resume his career. I happen to think he's a scumbag and should be banned, but I'll agree to disagree with those who have a different opinion.

2. I call Total BS on claims he took a plea for any other reason than that he was definitely guilty, and that the evidence was overwhelmingly against him. He has millions and millions of dollars, and can afford the best lawyers in the world. If his lawyers advised him to accept a plea, then they are absolutely convinced he would get creamed in court. He isn't taking the plea because he's innocent and afraid he'd lose in court, he's taking the plea because he's guilty and afraid he'd lose in court. As to White's (oh the irony) claim that he's upset the plea will prevent all the facts from coming out, did he wonder maybe that preventing the facts from coming out was in Vick's favor and part of the reason he took the plea?

3. White considers dog fighting to be as bad as hunting. I'm not a hunter, and find the practice unnecessary since KeyFood was invented. However, to equate running a dog fighting ring (and torturing the dogs to death), which is illegal in every state, with a legal activity is just poor logic, and really non-sensical.

the NAACP Leader's name is "R.L. White"... that made me LOL 😀

As for Vick, i personally beleave he should be hung by his balls from the nearest bridge...

Top Ten Michael Vick Excuses

"House came with a dogfighting pit, and it seemed like a shame to waste it"

"Wanted to distract the public from crooked NBA referees and cheating baseball players"

"Judgment was impaired by playing with lead-based Chinese toys"

"I was training the dogs to...uhhhhhh...get Osama"

"Always wanted to be quarterback for a prison team, like in 'The Longest Yard'"

"Steroids made me all crazy"

"Eddie Brill told me I needed something big to close on"

"Oh like you've never run an illegal dogfighting ring"

"Thought I could get out of it by buying Kobe Bryant's wife a diamond"

"Fights weren't worse than what you see on 'The View'"

It will be interesting to see the difference in treatment, that's for sure.

I don't see the connection. They've let people back into pro sports who have committed crimes before. Rose isn't banned because his crime was so heinous, he's banned because his crime involved the sport. If Vick had beaten to death the dog of a referee who made a bad call, I don't think people would be surprised if he was banned from football because of the nexus with the sport.

Would any amount of incarceration rehabilitate Vick? I don't think so. I think he feels this is his right, they are "only" dogs.

Ban him from the NFL, it is a business like any other, if an employee does something to hurt your corporate image, you get rid of them. Simple.

Then put him to work in the local no-kill animal shelter for 16 hours a day cleaning out kennels.

Pete Rose is a scumbag as well. He gambled with his image and lost. The price? No Hall of Fame. There are plenty of good citizen athletes out there waiting to get in. Suck on it, Charlie Hustle.

I think whats worse is that this representative of the NAACP is also inferring that too.

He represents the Atlanta chapter, I wonder what the national office thinks about this issue. I normally support NAACP efforts, I think they have the best of intentions, this guy is way way off base and hurts the NAACP image. I think he should be removed as well. Nonsensical trying to turn this into a race issue.

Why is he way way off base? I mean after anybody served their sentence, why shouldn't the society give them a second chance? Although I agree with people saying NFL is a business and they will do what's best for their business and they don't have the obligation to hire Vick. But I believe after Vick does his time, he deserves being treated like anyone else. Unfortunately I understand how people think and I can see that people won't forgive and forget no matter what Vick does.

After pulling a stunt like this, there is no way that he deserves the privilege of returning to pro football.

Agreed.

I thought I heard that additional charges are still possible?

Anybody that thinks it's as simple as just letting Vick play after serving his sentance is overlooking the fact atht pro football, as much as I love it, is nothing other than entertainment.

Arthur Blank, as owner of the team, is gonna have to do a lot of calculations as to what would be the effect of having Vick back on the team.

- What is Vick's popularity gonna be? Will attendance suffer is Vick comes back?

- Do you sacrifice two or more seasons with a backup QB so Vick's spot is open when his time is up?

- The Falcon's have a new coach and presumably a new offensive scheme, think of how far behind the team Vick will be in his development when he rejoins.

- Does he wanna turn the Falcon franchise into the "Oakland" of the East, where criminals and misfits are welcome?

- Away games are gonna be *fun*. What are fans gonna chant and throw at Vick & the Falcons?

- How long will PETA continue to give the Falcons grief if Vick returns?

- I suspect Vick is a very popular sports star in Atlanta, will you lose more fans by NOT bringing him back?

Tough call. If I was Blank I might just hope the NFL Commisioner resolves this for me.

I expect him to ban Vick from playing. He has been coming down hard on players and this makes the others look like small fry. (Most of those haven't even been convictions!

I'm still mad the Bears released Tank Johnson after that suspected DUI. But what can you expect from a city that doesn't have cheerleaders because it would erode the family morals.

I don't see why what he did is even a crime. Fighting his dogs on his property. In a free country, you should be able to do what you want unless you are violating some other person's rights. Animals aren't persons, and assigning them some imaginary rights is completely asinine, and infringes on people's rights wrt their property for the benefit of someone else's feelings about animals.

I think Vick's big mistake was in harming animals. Americans love animals, people not so much. If he had harmed people this wouldn't be an issue.

The Raiders once recruited Warren Wells out of San Quentin State Prison. He led the league in receiving the next year. I believe he was in for attempted murder and the Raiders pulled strings and voila, Wells is released.

The mistake the NFL is making is thinking they have a good reputation they need to protect. I think most people realize the league is stocked with thugs, who happen to be good at football.

One Charger, safety Terrence Kiel, was arrested by Drug Enforcement Administration agents at the team's practice facility in September on charges of transporting and possessing a controlled substance. Another, linebacker Steve Foley, was shot and wounded by an off-duty police officer in an incident in which Foley was charged with drunken driving. And it was learned recently that unidentified Charger players were cleared in another DEA probe that has been passed on to another agency.

At least 35 NFL players have been arrested this year on charges ranging from disorderly conduct to felony burglary, a number that alarms league and players' union officials. "We can handle all the other issues, but this is the one that concerns me the most," NFL Players Association Executive Director Gene Upshaw said.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell declined an interview req
Cincinnati has been this season's capital of dubious behavior. Eight Bengals players have been arrested this year, including one player who has been arrested three times. After Bengals cornerback Deltha O'Neal was stopped at a traffic checkpoint early last Saturday and charged with driving while intoxicated, Coach Marvin Lewis, a former Washington Redskins assistant, condemned the conduct of his offending players.

as a society we have decided deliberate and wanton cruelty and abuse to animls for amusement is unlawful and should be punished. I agree.

It's nice to know that we as a society can decide what people do with their private property on their private property without infringing on anyone's rights.

I seem to remember you making some idiotic comments about gun owners and trailer parks, you didn't care too much about peoples rights wrt firearms on their own property at the time, whats changed?

Edit - Yep, you said that you don't think anyone should own assault rifles. So in your world, owning an assault rifle should not be allowed because thats bad, but torturing animals is ok because its on your own property. Weird.

I said the same thing at work about the dogs being his property and I was looking at this with a more Libertarian point of view and I was refered to as being strange. I guess liberty is at the whim of a lynch mob mentality.

I would love to see the Roman Gladiator games brought back. Now that would be a killer pay for view event.
