I like being able to easily split my attention between things. While I'm typing here I can be reading something work related, and keep a general eye on things. Yeah, I can maximize this and still have work related things open on the other monitor, but this way I can keep an eye on lots of things without having to minimize and maximize windows constantly.

Agreed, I generally like to have atleast 2 or 3 things going on at once, hell I pay attention to IRC while playing Q3 sometimes.

Ok, that's farther than I go. Although, I think I have paid attention to IRC/AIM while playing console games. :p

Of course, most of the games I play on my computer aren't FPSes. FreeCiv (I hate this game, I don't know why I play around with it), fish, and dope wars are about the only games I play :p

I don't think it's carpal tunnel, but I know my hands hurt pretty bad sometimes.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a stinging or burning feeling on the bottomside of your wrist, caused by using your hands/fingers a lot while your wrist is bent backwards. The tendons and whatnot actually rub on the bottomside of your wrist when you bend your hand back, and after so long, that causes irritation. Or something like that anyways.

The rest of your hands/fingers/wrists being sore I believe is just general RSI (repetetive stress injury). You are supposed to take a 10 minute break for every hour of keyboard/mouse use, but who wants to do that? :p

btw: it helps to get a good keyboard, and "good" often means downright weird, like these, this, etc. IMO normal keys are awful and laptop-style keys tend to be much easier on the hands. Oh, and don't forget dvorak :D

Yeah, this is more in my joints than wrists (of course, now that I say that I am getting some soreness in the wrist too :p).

I generally take a break every hour, unless I'm REALLY into something.

Oh, and one last thing - those little legs on keyboards are evil. You want the keyboard to be flat, or more importantly, you want your wrists to be straight while you are typing. A lot of times people jack up their keyboards on those legs and have their wrists bent backwards while they type. I don't really know why those legs are there.

Depends on where the keyboard is. If you're sitting really low in your chair, those little legs might actually help out with getting the angle right.

I gotta use the legs. I hate flat keyboards. Right now I got the legs going, but the keyboard is far enough back that I can rest my elbows on the edge of the desk-like structure and my wrists are almost straight. But the legs are necessary! Unless I'm using my laptop, in which case I am usually in some VERY not ergonomically correct position anyways :p

Why are they necessary? When I realized this a long time ago and put them down, it felt weird at first, but that goes away very quickly.

Because I don't want to change it :p It would be one more change I would have to make everytime I went to use someone else's computer. The legs are up at home, the legs are up at work, the legs are up at the library. It's just easier. Maybe I'll try it for a day though...

EDIT: Ok, this isn't as wierd as I thought it would be. Definitely not used to it though...

Don't badmouth the Konsole tabs!!! :|

At work our boxes have two naming themes, Tolkien or Simpsons, the ability to name the tabs in the Konsole is golden to avoid confusion between the more similar names.

I wasn't, they're great. For other people :p

That should come in handy. There is a way to name xterms too, IIRC. And I went with a monkey theme on my network :D

Coming up with the last monkey name was tough. I'm not even sure what that monkey looks like. :p I guess I should start looking into more though...

For sore wrists here are some tips.

Put your keyboard down low, almost on your lap. Up on a desk is too high.

You can have it up there, but you have to hold your arms, so your palms are above the keyboard in proper typist fasion. This is awkward so it's easier to have the keyboard low and have your arms rest at your so they hang and you have less tempation to drop your palms and rest them below your space bar.

Also if you can put the mouse on the same level as your keyboard. That way it takes minimal movment to get to your mouse.

Much of sore wrists is caused by excess movement if you have the mouse on a seperate level as your keyboard then you end up continously bending your wrists to match the differnent levels.

Also another big thing to watch out for is never rest your wrists on the edge of the table. Having the sharp corner of the desk right were your wrists bend puts a large amount of pressure right on those dozens of little bones. This causes my wrists to be sore within fifteen minutes of resting my arms like that.

Also another thing that helps me out a lot is to have a way to prop up my elbow when using the mouse. On my main desk I have these leafs that pull out, I put a couple books or a towel or whatever is convenient and use that to prop up my elbow. Otherwise I end up being lazy and resting my wrist on the mouse pad or corner of the desk.

I read most of that stuff somewere about egonomic workspace. One of the few websites not trying to sell you something.

My wrists use to get very sore after a while of being on the computer and now it's pretty rare. (also correct typing helps out a lot. Like using my pinky to operate things like the backspace key helps)

Oh, and one last thing - those little legs on keyboards are evil.

Definately.

edit

A guy at my work uses this funky little number

It's much weirder looking real life. The thing is absolutly gigantic (your arms go straight into the keyboard with no angling in) and those keys are the same size as the old fasioned full sized IBM eletronic keyboard/word proccessors thingies. Each hand fits into a little bowl lined with the keys. They are spaced so that your fingers can reach all the keys with equal amount of effort.

A previous employeer bought it for him because he was beginning to develope carpel tunnel. Over 300 dollar keyboard. He used it for 3 or so years. Eventually just from the repetative impact of his hands it cracked all the way thru the thick thick plastic cover. They replaced it for free, it was WELL out of warentee...

He says it slows down typing a bit, though. He went from 95+ words a minute down to about 70-80
