N00b ? on ND filters

Bought a variable ND filter 0.3 - 3 ( 1-10 stops it says).
Set my f to 16 and ISO to 100

I want MORE ND.

1. Do these things stack?
Looks like 10 stops is about the max.

2. What is the secret?


Also, 30 secs is max on my camera. Next setting is BULB.
3. Can I operate that with a remote?

Otherwise I have to manually hold the button down for 1 min or whatever exposure I am looking for.

I think I need MUCH longer exposures to really get a better effect.

You can stack them. If you stack too many, you might see some vignetting and color cast. And depending on your variable filter, turning it to maximum can yield some poor results (x shapes).

I'm sure you can operate bulb mode via remote. Spend a little extra and get one with a timer, I wish I did.

What secret are you looking for?

Looked into the welding glass. I have not liked the results I saw from folks's DIY. On top of that, the Vivitar variable ND was inexpensive, $20. I don't think I can screw another filter on top of it. I will ask on the live chat.

If you stack two linear polarizers you should be able to recreate a really high ND filter. Not that I've tried it, but in theory it should work.
