n00b builder, X2 3800+ just arrived

Just got my first CPU in the mail from Flickerdown

X2 3800
ADA3800DAA5BV
LDBHE 0602XPMW

I have read so much about this or that stepping... does anyone have any info on this one?

Actually kind of exciting getting something like this in the mail

A second question would be - if I don't intend to overclock this chip, can I go with the stock heatsink/fan or does everyone get aftermarket units for these chips?

EDIT: Yeesh!! Manual says "Use of anything other than enclosed heatsink/fan will 'void the warranty'".

lol... I figured that's what 0602 meant. My credibility is shot as I reveal that I have no plans to overclock this chip

Doc... can you tell me anything about the Heatsink/Fan issue - must I replace them if I want to cool the (non-overclocked) chip properly? Do I really want to 'void the warranty'? Especially because this is my first build...

There's no need to buy another HSF unless you find the stock one too loud.

How can that void the warranty? They can't prove you didn't use the stock cooler. Just take the cooler, use a slab of their thermal paste, and let the PC prime for a few hours. Now it's used, and they can tell. That means that, from that point on, they can not say that you didn't use it .

If you only plan for non-overclocking or a modest overclock, you can use the stock cooler, even with the stock thermal paste *shrugs*
But if you want the best overclock and lowest temperatures you won't get it without a decent air or water cooler, Arctic Silver 5 and *optionally=>experts only* removing the integrated heatspreader
But for the start and to test if it runs properly (and no better cooling options are at hand) just give it a try with the stock stuff...

Most people using the Stock HSF have been able to easily OC to 2.4Ghz with load temps under 57*C. If you are running stock speed you will definetely be fine (do you really think AMD would ship these $300 CPU's and not provide adequate cooling for them? That is one sure way to go out of business, LOL!!!!)

Ok guys, thanks for the heatsink consultation. If I am able to overclock even modestly to i.e. 2.2, I am going to be happy about it. I'll leave the maniplalation of the integrated heatspreader to my next build; I may buy a $400 rig and try some of these things like extreme overclocking and heatspreader riffing on it.

richardrds, I was wondering the same thing - on a chip like this, wouldn't they ship it with a part that was capable of doing the job? I thought maybe some of the stuff I was reading was attributable to the 'enthusiast effect' where guys are just going for the ultimate in performance, which is not where I am (yet...).

Thanks again for the info, as always. It's the least y'all could do, after talking me up from a 3000 Venice to this chip
