Just sold off my Classic Athlon 750 and Abit board
Looking to go to either a P3 or AMD setup..Suggestion's?


Over clocking is not a big issue (but would be nice) STABILITY is the most important thing for me

Should I go with a P3 if so What is the best M/B to use with it? and cooling setup
Or
Should I go with AMD? Which one Tbird-Duron? And Which Borad to use with it? and cooling setup

I am a little leary of AMD after reading of all the CORE damage being done by installing Cooler's 🙁

Your sugestion's would be welcomed 🙂

That's more of a user issue, not a cpu defect.
 
I realize that. However if you simply install the hsf like it is supposed to be installed, you will have no problem.
 
Dewd... AMD(1.333ghz) is better in half the test/benchmark it does over a P4(1.7ghz)..... but it still half expensive.... so just imagine the P3... More expensive.. and far from beating the AMD
 

You have to consider it yourself, everyone has different preferences, no one can say what is *the* solution.

VIA has *some* issues which may (or may not!) cause problems, if you're willing to accept that and can do troubleshooting if there's problems, go for AMD - it's far superior chip.

If you want easy setup, and the extra performance is not important, go for Intel.

I prefer AMD. And Asus A7V133 to go with it. I've had zero problems with this rig.
 
Hey, a new one..not just another P4 vs Thunderbird thread..
But an easy one..I really like the P3's, but there is no real reason to buy one when the amd will outpace it by a large margin for a lower price..

Amen. In addition, if you buy a &quot;stable&quot; Tbird motherboard, then you are basically on a way to serenity.

Iwill KK266-R
Corsair or Crucial memory
TB Santa Cruz
etc.

There are a ton of threads on &quot;what's the best&quot;, and the SEARCH feature will be very useful in this situation.
 
System stability will tend to follow the &quot;garbage in, garbage out&quot; rule. Buy cheap, generic parts without any prior research, skip the installation of recommended patches and drivers, skirt manufacturer's recommendations for power supply, HSF, etc, and you'll probably end up complaining afterwards; buy solid, known parts with good buzz, install every single patch, bug fix, and driver update you can get your hands on, and follow the manufacturer's specs for power supply and HSF, and you'll be stable as a rock. For any system, Intel or AMD, it depends entirely on your level of comittment and prior research.

At this point in time, AMD systems are definitely the best choice. Like any platform, a few issues cropped, but they were quickly resolved with simple BIOS/software updates. An Athlon or Duron system today is always cheaper than an equivalent Intel system.

For the absolute best stability, I recommend the MSI K7T Turbo, since you arent into overclocking, it's a great option, very cheap too. For heatsink, I recommend the Taiso CGK760.

P4 1.4 = $186.00 ---excellent HSF incl. some overclock +300-400Mhz
Samsung 256MB PC800 = $158.00

Total = $519.00

just got a 1.2g t-bird
w/a abit kt7a-raid mobo
512 pc133 ram
and a geforce2 mx, takes a while to tweek but im very happy with my choice this machine really kicks but in quake and unreal. go w/ AMD you won't be dissapointed

Kinda tired of hearing that same old baloney. If you aren't competent enough to install a CPU and a HS/F assembly (without damaging the CPU) you shouldn't be DIY. Not a personal insult, just a generalization. I've installed many, many Duron/T-Bird chips with various HS/F assemblies and have yet to crack or even chip a core. All it takes is a little patience. If you are paranoid, get a good HS/F that mounts through the M/B (like the great Swiftech MC-462A) and you won't EVER have to worry about it ..




 
Well, looking at my TBird and My FCPGA P3, it looks like the core is better protected (with whatever coating they use) on the Intel chip, so maybe the Intel chip has more durable packaging - just a thought.

Anyway, for Stablility, I'd go with Intel on an 815 chipset (just wait a bit and get a B step version). For price/peformance AMD can't be beat. AMD/VIA solutions seem to take a bit more effort to get working in a stable fashion. I think this has more to due with Microsoft and Via than it does with AMD though (and the problems seem worse with Win2k - pointing to _MSFT_).

I would have choosen a P4 system, except it would have cost me twice as much to updgrade (new Ram, more expensive Mobo, more expension CPU - since my 1.33GHz AMD is about as fast as the 1.7GHz P4!).

Do a search, if the thousands of posts devoted to this subject can't answer your question, go with a Cyrix. 😉
 
Right now I think I would wait on either. Not that the performance to price ratio seems to go with AMD. Looking at the drop in prices for RDRAM/P4 Motherboards and the upcoming change in the P4 all spell even less expensive units for all. I changed to AMD several months ago and will most likely go back to Intel three months after the new P4 is launched. I'm just betting Intel has had their A*S kicked in too often not to come up with a killer CPU change.
 
First of all, I would like to thank everyone from refraining from posting stuff likely to start a flame war. I'm glad to see that neither a GUTB clone or a &quot;AMD rulez, Intel sucks (anatomical part of your choice)&quot; has started this on a downward trend. I would definitely go AMD, though. Just my thoughts, but I like tweaking my hardware. I would recommend a 1.2 GHz T-Bird 266 FSB and a KK266-R (mainly for the extra IDE channels, but thats because I'm me). Oh, and get some crucial PC133 CAS 2, its pretty cheap, free shipping, and most of all, its quality.
