I was wondering if it mattered if you Mix memory?

by mixing memory I mean using two separate types such as corsair and mushkin?

what happnes or?

My dad was the one who told me that this was bad

But it is certainly good practice not to mix.

You could possibly have dual channel issues, but other that that, it should be no problem.

Usually not a problem. If there is, try this:

If the specs are different, install the slower stick by itself in the first slot. Set the cmos settings for ram on "auto" (timings may be "by SPD"). Write down the settings. Switch to manual ram settings and enter the values you wrote down. Install the second stick.

It used to be bad a few years ago - and that is probably what your dad remembers - but today's mobos will accept different DIMMs.

Except for Dual Channeling, it doesn't make any difference. Most mobo bios will default to the slowest stick. But given a choice always try using identical sticks!

Never had any problem mixing ram. Even years ago it worked.

heh, all my older rigs have all different dimms (pc100/133, pc2100, basically any non dual channel rig). they'll work fine, like jiggz said.

the only problem might be different timings. if you can get RAM that has the same timings, it would work best. but except for Dual Channel, you shouldn't have any problem.

Your dad was basically at the lowest level wrong!!
But some motherboards do have issues with some brands of memory!!

But some motherboards do have issues with some brands of memory!!

How can you say he is wrong "at the lowest level" then follow that up with a "but"? He's probably being safe rather than sorry.

@ OP: Not much to worry about, even with dual channel.

Hehe probably. Had to be a matching pair, or in the case of my old 386 a matching set of 4 30-pin simms. Man I hated it when 1 of 4 matching sicks went bad :frown: Made me lose 4MB! That was alot of loss for that old system, I had it loaded up with 16MB before that one stick went bad
