mystery ships from iraq may contain WMD

Three mystery ships are tracked over suspected 'weapons' cargo

Each with a deadweight of 35,000 to 40,000 tonnes, the ships have been sailing around the world's oceans for the past three months while maintaining radio silence in clear violation of international maritime law, say authoritative shipping industry sources.

The vessels left port in late November, just a few days after UN weapons inspectors led by Hans Blix began their search for the alleged Iraqi arsenal on their return to the country.

We need to board them and check it out, regardless of danger. I suspect we already would have if we were that concerned about it...

The plot thickens. I wonder how we'll apprehend them without initiating a 'scuttle' scenario.

Very quietly we'll sneak up with that swedish ship that was used to carry the Cole home and hi-jack them.

that is what the article claims, i suppose they could have a "dead man" switch with explosives rigged to send the whole lot to the bottom

if they stay in water < 1000 fathoms, salvage would take a looooooong time

Eh...if they scutlle it there are still ways to find out what was onboard. Send down a couple of ROV's and you'll get your answers.

This isn't going to turn into another taxi cab with radioactive materials just 200 miles from the Iraqi border is it?

Wasn't the idea to prevent an environmental disaster? Not like we care about the oceans ecosystem, all the fallout from this war will eventually find its way to the oceans anyways.

Is this a reputable news source?

anybody here from the UK?

this is from the "contact us" link on the home page

Please decide whether your query should be directed to the website or the print edition of the Independent, and choose an option from the following groups. Note that almost all editorial content on the website comes from the print edition, so unless your query is definitely related to the website, you should probably contact the paper first.

Independent Digital is a subsidiary of Independent News & Media plc.

The Independent group in the UK is based at
Independent House, 191 Marsh Wall, London E14 9RS
The general switchboard number is 020 7005 2000

so i guess it is a "real" paper, but maybe it is like the national enquirer? i dunno

And the propaganda machine rolls on by yet again...

You guys remember the Gulf of Tonkin?
"Iraqi ships containing WMDs fired on American ships that were trying to board them. Bush declares war "

There sure would be....just watch the shores close to where the ship sank. The resulting mass wash-up of dead sea creatures will be the tell all your looking for.

I've been reading Independent.co.uk off and on for roughly the past year and a half, and my impression has always been that it's fairly reliable (no more or less so than any reputable American online newspaper). They do seem to be fairly left of center, which shows a little in their reporting, but overall I think they're pretty solid.

I do not know, but

Here is a similar story from Canada.com
Interesting. The first points towards WMD ships and the second, which includes 2 ships not 3 - but is almost certainly about the same ships - points more towards what I'd expect is importing of illegal refugees.

Well considering that those 2 ships were off the west coast of Canada and they got a response from an Oriental voice and the three ships mentioned early were said to be "steaming around in ever-decreasing circles." in the Indian ocean i really doubt they are the same ships.

Well both stories are quite similar. I don't pretend to know how often ships go around doing what these are doing.
