I am doing a rebuild on a computer.
Windows 98 is the request to be in stalled
but it bugs out on install
sometimes hangs at 6 or 7% of install ,then complains about a scratched or dirty CD.
It worked fine yesterday with a different hard drive.

or it will complain about a disk compression utility and it cannot continue the install.

I have FDISKed and formatted several times and only a primary DOS partition shows ,NO non DOS partitions.

Is there a way to get rid of the compression utility that is unidentified ?

Or a better approach to the whole situation ?

It sounds like the boot disk you're using to install may be running some extra software. Download the Win98SE custom disk image here to boot with and start the install. http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

You can get a utility from the hard drive maker to completely erase the drive (can take a few hours) by writing all zeroes to it. This ensures there's nothing on it before you partition and format it.

It may also be due to overclocking if there is any.
