Mysterious Heat

I have an Inwin IW-S523P case and an athlon TBird 1Ghz.
For some reason, my cpu temperature is always around 48-53c. At night when it is really cold. it will go down to 38-40c. My roomate's computer in the same room is always about 5-10c lower in temperature all the time.
I don't understand because I dont overclock, and I also have an Alpha PAL8045 heatsink, which is supposed to be more than adequate. (with a vantec stealth fan)

can anyone guess why the cpu is unning so hot? My case is modded to use a 92mm fan as an intake in the front and there is a 80mm exhaust next to the cpu in the back. All of these are Vantec stealth fans.

any help appreciated.

Does your roommate have the ssame "system" temperature as you do?

Does his part of the room stay "cooler" than yours due to proximity to window / AC unit?

Does your roommate have the same exact motherboard/rpocessor setup as you(This is very important)?

I would also add the question, when was the last time you cleaned out your case and HSF with some canned air? There can be all sorts of "dust bunnies" in there; especially on the HSF. Cleaning that out can drop your temps a few degrees just by itself.

the inside of my case is very clean. I just bought this case and cleaned everything when putting all the parts in. My computer is next to the window, his is not. We have about the same case temp.

I have an Abit KT7E and a retail AVIA 1Ghz TBird. This chip is unlocked and has run perfectly at 1.4ghz before.

M friend has an Axia 1.2Ghz on an Iwill KK266. he does not overclock at all.

There are a number of reasons why your system runs hotter. First of all, your use of Vantec Stealth fans may not provide enough airflow to keep the CPU down at lower temperatures. Also, while you may have a bigger heatsink, he may have a better fan. Furthermore, as has been noted, dust may be inhibiting the heat transfer. Also, your motherboards may simply take different readings. Currently, Socket A motherboards dont read the actual CPU die temperature; they read the temperature of the air trapped underneath the CPU and adjust the reading up a few degrees in order to provide a better indication of the die temperature. But no Socket A motherboard is entirely accurate, and different motherboards scale the temperature different amounts.

My roomate uses an SVC Golden Gate with a low profile delta fan (the one that comes with a Taisol).

I am thinking about getting a new fan too, I probably will do another cleaning and re-apply using Arctic Silver 3. Last time I did this was over a year ago with AC2.

Now that you've provided the motherboards, some more info can be dispensed 😉.

THe KK266 series of motherboards reads temps very low compared to other socket-a motherboards. It is also among the most inaccurate socket-a "temperature reading" motherboards.

Compared to your KT7E, the KK266E temps should[b/] be lower, and 5-15C lower shouldn't be any major concern, as it is simply adifference of socket-thermsitor placement and motherboard compensation for that reading.

Are you running @ 1.4 again? Either way, a good cleaning will help and possibly a higher cfm fan for the HS. That stealth fan might not be enough to keep things in line. I know it is quieter but there are tradeoffs.

My 1Ghz TBird is running at 1Ghz. The temps seem to have gotten better after a slight cleaning. I still need to go in there with the canned air. The thing is my friend's cpu heatsink uses a low-profile delta which moves about 19 or 20 cfm. My stealth should move about the same. We have the same ambient case temp, even though I have a 92 mm intake he has a 120mm. it seems only the cpu temps are different. So mikewarriors info seems to explain it.

My goal is to lower temps enough and maybe get a new fan so I can run my cpu at 1.4 GHz again. Hot weather sucks.
