MySQL / PHP - wtf? N00b here

I'm a newbie to MySQL/php... My webhosting service has this feature but I'm clueless as how to get a rudimentary forum/bulletin board established on my site.

Does anyone know of a good step-by-step procedure? Thanks

phpbb is pretty simple, and they have step by step instructions...
its super easy for a IIS server
And its not too bad to use with apache on linux either...

Who is your web host?

I would also recommend phpBB or SMF.

I highly recommend SMF (simple machines forum) over PhpBB. PhpBB is full of security holes and you'll find yourself constantly upgrading it.

And SMF isn't? PHPBB is the #1 freeware forum, so it's the #1 target for exploits. The holes are discovered and fixed pretty quickly. SMF has a fairly long list of security patches too. It's just that SMF is a relatively minor player, they're not targeted as frequently, so the exploits are not discovered as rapidly.

Whatever forum you use, you MUST stay on top of the updates and bugfixes. Installing SMF isn't going to protect you against hacks, they're still out there, likely will be for all of eternity and your forum will remain vulnerable if you don't install patches as they're released.

Why are you people still recommending phpBB when some hosts are starting to block it from their server? I know that every package has its faults, but when hosts are realizing that "hey this thing is causing a lot of problems"... I would think you should avoid it.
