My Yahoo SBC DSL connection works nicely until I stop using it for a while...

I ordered sbc yahoo dsl for my house 2 weeks ago and it works nicely...however, if i walk away from it for a good hour or more and come back the connection will have dropped and i have to power off my d-link 604+ router and power it back on, then boom everything works normal again...

any ideas?

when I first got the speedstream 5100 DSL modem, I had it positioned next to one of my logitech z-640 speakers and the tech rep told me that it would cause EMI and to position the modem far away...I now have the modem and router at a reasonable distance away from both the speakers and each other...

initially the modem was giving me lots of EMI problems until I moved it away from the speakers. Could this have damaged it to the point where dropped connections occur after periods of non-use?

TIA

Not sure why the problem occurs, but I seriously doubt there was any physical damage done to it. My modem and router sit right next to a ups and an am/fm radio (within inches) and it has never been a problem for me. I have SBC dsl too and every once in a while (both at this house and the one I lived at previously) the connection drops even though all the indicator lights stay on on both the modem and router. If I make a phone call (usually call the local time/temp number) the connection restores. Never figured that one out.

connection has been flawless since i've unhooked it from the router, however i'd like the protection and expandability that a router offers, so i hope it doesnt drop anymore on me when using it...

thanks again

on my netgear mr814, it disconnects from the internet if it goes 5 minutes with no net activity. maybe your router is just timing out? when i come back to the computer, i have to make a request for something on the net (webpage, aim, whatever) and the router connects, and within a minute, i'm back online.

maybe you can check your time out on your router or try reconnecting through the router (use the web admin tool to reconnect) instead of power cycling it.

there is definitely an issue with my D-link 604 router. I'll have to somehow tell it to stop timing out....my connection is flawless when not using the router

i've used this router forever and never had issues with it with my old cable connection at my apartment, would i need to configure it differently if i'm now using DSL?

If you have the 5100b (5 lights in front), you can go to http://192.168.0.1/ and experiment with the timeout settings under the Advanced menu. You might want to increase the DHCP lease time while your in there as well so your router doesn't have to renew the lease every 10min (the default).

from the manual ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/di604_revE1/Manual/di604_manual_205.zip
login to the router (i assume you know how to do this, since you set up the router.) click PPPoE (its probably already selected because its already set up)
and here is the important bit:

Maximum Idle Time: The amount of time of inactivity before
disconnecting your PPPoE session. Enter a Maximum Idle Time (in
minutes) to define a maximum period of time for which the Internet
connection is maintained during inactivity. If the connection is inactive for
longer than the defined Maximum Idle Time, then the connection will be
dropped. Either set this to zero or enable Auto-reconnect to disable this
feature.
MTU: MTU stands for Maximum Transmission Unit. For PPPoE
connections, you may need to change the MTU settings in order to work
correctly with your ISP.
Auto-Reconnect: If enabled, the Broadband Router will automatically
connect to your ISP after your system is restarted or if the connection is
dropped.

btw, as far as i know, cable is an "always on" connection whereas you have to login/logout with dsl. which would explain why it worked with your old cable, but not the way you want it for dsl.

great info guys, i appreciate it very much...

I talked with an SBC tech rep and I think we've tackled the issue:

Speedstream 5100 modems, by default, have PPPoE functionality built into them, however, when combined with certain routers, the modem's PPPoE functionality is less than average.

The idea is to disable the PPPoE within the modem's config page by setting it to bridged mode. This will deactivate the "Internet" light on the modem. Then go ahead and plug in your router and configure the router to use its PPPoE functionality, generally more reliable than that of a DSL modem.

Has seemed to work fine for now, hopefully it will keep working...
